looks like im off to tear apart some electronics i have laying around to find one of these regs. i built a magnum mod from a flashlight but i kept the battery pack that it came with. i used 3 li-poly batteries that were out of some old smoke51 batts that i had layin around and i have em wired in parallel so im only gettin 3.9v usually. id like to wire 2 in series and make it a 5v mod. if i can find one of these regs layin around ill put it together and post my results

It's highly unlikely that you'll just happen to stumble across a 5V regulator that can handle at least 2A and is small enough to fit in an atty tube. You can order AP1084 regulators from Digikey for about $1.50 each, so it's really not worth the trouble.

What about using air to cool the regulator or booster. If it was constructed radially like an ego cone you could harness the inhaled air and also warm it for a warmer vape.
It's not necessary. I've been vaping away on mine and using the epoxy putty to transfer heat to the tube works fine. The tube gets warm, but not as warm as the atty does, so it's totally manageable. It would be difficult bordering on impossible to overheat the regulator without burning out the atty first.

ok, I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, but I've managed to short out 3 of these things. I must be shorting out on the inside of the tube or something. I've been using madvapes 901 tubes, which are a bit short. I'll try a full sized tube in the next day or 2.. this is irritating me. I even managed to melt the spring in my xhaler. had to get a couple more from drew.. speaking of springs, I can't seem to find the other replacement spring from drew. I'll have to dig around some more. maybe I'll see if I can find one that has a ground for the rear tab instead of vout.

Weird. I've technically made three of these (or to be more accurate, assembled the same one three times in two different tubes) and didn't have any problem with shorting anything out. Are you using the same regulator I used? Are you sure your putty/thermal compound is not conductive? Don't forget, the back/tab is Vout, so if it makes direct contact with the tube or connector, that's a dead short to ground.

yeah, I'm pretty sure the putty (can't find my thermal compound) is non-conductive. I'm gonna see if I can find some other stuff to try with. I'm planning on using a normal length carto tube (the madvapes ones are a bit short). blah.

Got a link to the ones you got at TI? Can't seem to find them??
i got 5 for free from TI.
order a sample and when it asks what you are doing just put in that it's for a school project.
samples aren't to be used in devices to be sold as per their site disclaimer.
