I don't know where these guys came up with the 9v figure but they claim the zmax max input is 9v: ZMax Manual
[EDIT: I think that might be the actual zmax manual text]

I can't seem to find a data sheet for that pcb anywhere, but it sounds plausible, since it is designed to work with dual batteries (~8.4v fully charged).

What battery are you considering though?

Two big issues with 9V batteries: The paltry mAh rating (400-600) which leads to the next problem, which is useful life under a 1-2A draw. I haven't seen any test graphs, but since they're usually meant for mA levels, I imagine you'd get one good vape before you drain the battery dry. Even AA alkalines have a gnat's lifespan in a 4xAA or AAA mod. I've considered making a 6xAA NiMH mod for the Z-Max and OKR-T or TI 08XXX series regulator interchangeably. You could drop that down to a 6XAAA NiMH unit to get the whole thing to be smaller. I think that's the best you're going to get as far as alternative battery sources.
