901 auto batts coming by themselves in case...

Thought it best to post this question here. I tossed my cartridges & began dripping about a month ago. Some of my older batteries, auto 901, the ones that I've been milking the life from before they meet that big trash can in the sky are turning on by themselves. They're still OK batts--not like new but have some good juice left.

I set my e-cig on the counter for a few minuets and can here it fire up. I open up my carry case and it will fire up on its own. I stick it in my charger & it fires up!

This never happened before I started dripping. I am assuming at this point I probably need to switch to manuals, but I just love the autos and hate to buy new chargers. So what's the deal? Is all that normal? Is it just because I have juice dripping into the batt opening?

whatagem, you are correct. The dangers of liquid seeping down into the automatic battery is one of the trade-offs for using the auto batteries and is magnified by us drippers. If it makes you feel any better, manual batteries can be damaged too by the liquid pooling up at the atomizer connector and allowing an electrical circuit to be created by the center positive pole and the outer negative pole if the manual switch is activated.

Two suggestions I have heard to try to remedy this problem (but I've never tried either!) is to use an electrical contact cleaner by spraying it into the battery hole (but use caution as too strong a blast could cause physical harm to the innards), or use a high grain alcohol (like Everclear) to clean out the gunk (the high grain alcohol cuts through gunk like solvent would and still evaporates away cleanly)

For the future, one suggestion (which I've been meaning to follow, but am still not religious about) is to blow out your atty at the end of the night and let it sit cartridge end down on an absorbent towel. The idea is that throughout the day, as we add liquid to our atomizer, some of it pools down into the ceramic bowl below the atomizer wick. Eventually, this ceramic bowl gets too full and will overflow....so where does that overflow go....through the hole in the atomizer's battery connector. So, by doing this every night, you are emptying out the excess liquids in that ceramic bowl and hopefully, will have less liquid leakage issues. I've also been meaning to turn my batteries/mods battery connection down on an aborbent towel every night to try to drain any leaked liquid....again.....haven't actually managed to do it very often, but it's not a bad idea to try incorporating.

Whatagem, I've got two auto batts that are acting that way. With one I tried the electrical contact cleaner and then eventually use denatured alcohol on both in an attempt to clean the auto switch. No luck in my situation, but your results maybe different so it's worth a try. For the alcohol cleaning I used a syringe and inserted the needle through the air hole to insure the liquid was getting inside where it needed to be. After the soaking, I shook them out and then placed them connector side down to drain.

As for the manual batts and the need for a new charger, I believe the only difference is that the hole in your present charger is too small. When you try to screw in the manual batt you can't fully insert it due to the manual button being in the way. I would suggest using a utility or Exacto knive to ream out the hole in the plastic housing of the charger until it is large enough to accomondate the manual button.

Thanks, I'll take this into consideration. I had been swabbing the ends of my batts with rubbing alcohol, digging out gunk with a sharpened toothpick. As of yesterday I had four batts acting up and 2 duds--fairly newish batts not charging, not firing up. I've been really good about occasionally taking a batt & the atty and wiping the end on my jeans (gross work pants) to clean up periodically as I use them but still getting black gunk in batt.

Though for now, I have set all poltergeist batts aside. At work, one fired up while in my mouth and I suddenly had the taste of burning hair; the atty was red hot! I guess it got too dry? I've tasted dry before, but this was ridiculous

Whatagem, I've slowly drifted away from the factory batts in favor of a modded batt box. I'm a cart user and although I was starting to have problems with gunked up auto switches, my primary reason for the change was the charge time. Being a heavy vapor I was getting two hours or less from a factory batt. I finally found myself in a vicious cycle of vaping for two hours and charging for 4. A modded box with two 3.7 volt li-on batts will last about a day and half and since the connector is seperate from the batteries and switch, gunking isn't a problem. You might consider a similar arrangement and avoid the hassle with the factory batts.

I had tried a GG Nano & found that I really couldn't deal with the heaviness of it. I'm still smoking--but barely. I've been thinking once I kick cigs completely I might give it a try again--only that I think I might need to go with something along the lines of 6 volts. Yeah, it would prob be even heavier than Nano.

My biggest issure is that the 901 has completely replaced the cigarette in most cases because I can bite down on it and go--just like a cig. One of many examples: When I cleaned the house, a cig was in my mouth the ENTIRE time. Now, it's my 901.

I'm experimenting with a Kensington battery pack & a manual pass thru around the house to see if I can get used to the button pushing and not having it in my mouth every second. Working pretty well so far. And it's way cheaper (on Amazon) than that prodigy I was looking at!

So at least I won't go back to smoking once all my batts crap out on me. This Kensington is a little harsh, but delivers the kick I was looking for. Could even go for a little more

My batteries just started doing this...all three of them. Completely confused, as I've been dripping since January and all of a sudden all of my batteries are doing this. They will also completely refuse to give me vapor at all half the time. The other half they give me vapor without lighting up at all. I don't get how all of my batteries freaked out on me at once. I figured maybe a bad atomiser was causing it so I swapped to another one, but no dice. Looks like I'm buying all new batteries.

Sounds like you've got your money's worth out of them. Batts are considered a limited use item. A life expectancy of 3 to 6 months isn't uncommon.

Another thing you can do is to trim the rubber button down with a razor to make it fit into the charger. I dremelled up a charger and went into the circuit board for my 801 batteries and still it wouldn't fit. I shaved the button down and it fits fine... ALSO... it doesn't accidentally turn on in my pocket anymore without the big button sticking way out.
