I follow the 93.3 WMMR's Preston And Steve morning show by listening to their podcasts. Yesterday's (Monday, 7/29) show included a little banter about e-cigs. Casey, one of the producers (and an on-air member of the show) is the only one of the on-air members that smokes. He's quit a few times over the years and it sounds like he's slipped on his latest quit attempt; but he has a smok (?) e-cig now. There's a local doctor who is often on (in person and he calls in also) and he called in and said a few things about e-cigs; one of which had me
- they "super heat" the liquid. 'Don't inhale super heated smoke'
.
So I sent the following email to the show:
"Casey,
I didn't want Dr. Mike's statements on electronic cigarettes discourage you from using them.
I was a 1.5 pack of Marlboro lights smoker for about 25 years. I tried the usual ways to quit smoking; gum, patches, Zyban, hypnosis, cold turkey. The best out of that list was cold turkey and that only 'worked' for 3 days before the wife toldbe [me] to either start smoking or get out ;-).
I've been using electronic cigarettes for the past 2.5 years and have not had a single tobacco cigarette in that time AND my wife continues to smoke.
When Dr. Mike said that electonic cigarettes "super heat" the liquid, I dang near crapped myself. A correctly working electronic cigarette will in no way "super heat" anything. There are no "long term" studies on electronic cigarettes; depending on your definition of "long term". Electronic cigarettes were just invented ~10 years ago. They only reached US markets about 6 years ago. I've had no adverse effects from daily use of an electronic cigarette for over 2.5 years; many, many others have been using them for 5 or 6 years with no adverse effects.
The "cig-a-likes" (electronic cigarettes that have the form factor of a tobacco cigarette) are what most people start out with. If these are what you are using and they work for you, fantastic; but there are better options out there. There are also US made "e-liquids" (the nicotine liquid that is used in electronic cigarettes); to take out the "made in China" arguments against e-cigs.
