I went to an upscale (for this neck of the woods) restaurant this week and went through dinner without vaping or attempting to ask if it was OK to vape in the dining section. You have to make reservations and having been especially late to dinner I didn't want to press it. Also the room was packed and I didn't want to be so obvious.
After dinner I went to the bar section of the restaurant expecting to start vaping away inconspicuously with all the smokers. I imagined that smoking would be permitted in the bar section especially since a band was playing. Well, no such luck.
It was freezing here on Saturday night, the wind was biting cold and I didn't want to go outside so I approached the bar tender and asked if there was an area for smokers, he just pointed outside. Oh no, I just couldn't go outside, so I asked him, "How about electric cigarettes?" Well, he didn't know what I meant so I explained it and then he asked his supervisor who knew what an electric cigarette was. He was more than fine with it and the initial bartender was fascinated. So I returned to my seat and began vaping away. Well I started with my joye 510 mega and then switched to my eGo after a bit.
I had no problems with the 510 (a green LED on the end) but every time I switched to my eGo different security guards would approach me. Someone had been complaining that there was someone smoking in the bar but as soon as I just showed them the ecig they walked away. It was a bit daunting, but I was allowed to vape and they had no problems with it. However someone in the bar was complaining to them. Probably a smoker that had to go outside into that cold wind.
Another plus, a relative that was there was fascinated and liked it and is thinking about making the switch.

This has happened to me on a few occasions. I'm surprised how many people don't know what ecigs are yet. When I'm vaping in public and they see the big battery, everyone looks shocked. On a few occasions people think I'm smoking weed, they think my Volcano Inferno (eGo-style) is a chillum or a steamroller (long cylindrical type of pipes).

What's really lame is that there's a county in my state (Washington) that recently banned public use of ecigs. The law is only a few months old, I had no clue about it so I got really ...... off when a bartender said I had to leave. He didn't just tell me to cut it out, he just told me to leave or he'd call the cops. I was pretty ...... considering I was with a big group of people on my friend's birthday and we all had to leave to keep the group together. Good thing I moved out of that county. The bars that I frequent now allow e-cigs and even sell some disposable ones, and the regulars that go there all know me and know what what the deal is. Though there's still an occasional jerk I don't know who sees me vaping and decides to tattle on me.

You should do what I do, and report harrasment. You shouldn't let someone make a false report against you. I recommend getting a lawyer, ignorance is no excuse. What if you were drinking water and someone reported you drinking vodka and thought you were a minor and reported you. Abuse is abuse. I personally would never make a false complaint against someone saying that they were doing something they weren't like accusing someone of smoking when they were instead vaping. And claiming the I was born under a rock IQ routine just makes matters worse. I live in WA. And it's always cold. Well finally for several years now I can vape indoors, and yet people still make complaints, I took someone to court for it and got a restraining order against the customer, remember you have the right to stand up for yourself and for what is right. They I'm ignorant and didn't know the difference between vapor and smoke just like someone thinking water is vodka routine doesn't work, and it will be seen in court. Be good to yourself. And happy vaping.

Actually I think that would have a bit of an overreaction. People where I lived are largely ignorant on what ecigs are but the restaurant did, they welcomed it and they were happy to let me vape, just as long as I didn't smoke. People thought that it was smoke, but no one from management gave me any hassle after they saw what it was. They were just doing their job by asking me if I was smoking, it looked like it...huge clouds, I mean,,,huge!
I could have got defensive about it, but that would have made vaping look bad or be frowned upon. If I had made a scene or complained about people complaining about me it would be well within the restaurants' rights not to permit vaping and I'm sure nobody here wants that. The best way to handle such situations is to educate rather than defend. There were at least 5 people that wanted to know more and thought they were "cool" (it was a very slow night) that is much better for getting vaping into the mainstream.

Wow I love your comments guys, I am in the UK and have NEVER seen anyone vaping inside or anywhere! I think its all still a bit new here.

Well anyway I'm looking forward with anticipation to the first time I whip it out in public, I've been avoiding it so far (just waited until I left) but I really want to be able to use this without any fear. I'll go with your reccomendation of asking first, the shame if they say no! but I think thats the right thing to do. I am armed with all the facts so I am ready for the inevitable 'discussion' from a media slanted problem person!

Love to all!
