A couple questions about Pass Throughs

Let me start this off by saying I have been 2 months now cigarette free I love vaping and have found my lungs work again, I can smell again, breathe again, I can walk without being out of breath. vaping has been one of the best positive changes I have made.

After trying all types of cartos and batteries I have found that my favorite setups so far are the eGo C twist with either a vivi nova tank for high VG liquids, or my smok tech dual coil for others.

Now, After some research (and personal experience) I know that the eGo batteries are considered "Disposable" (one of my twists died an early death) This is slightly concerning, I am a fairly poor college student right now and I dont not have the money to invest in a nice device that takes removable batteries. This brought me to the one solution I could find which I think are passthroughs? Most of the time I am at my laptop and wanted to know if these are considered fairly permanent? What is the lifespan of a passthrough?

Personally, I don't know the lifespan of an eGo battery. I use eGo passthroughs and Twists exclusively and have been vaping away for 6 months or more. None of them have failed. Even the one I ran over with a piece of construction equipment!!! I really don't think you can get a better battery for the money, IMHO.

A true passthrough, one without an inline battery, does just that, passes through power from the USB connection, nominal 5V.

Some passthroughs are regulated, they'll knock the voltage down to whatever (typically 3.4 - 3.8V).

A passthrough with inline battery is sometimes called a sit-and-go. Basically it just has the charger built-in.

A true passthrough is a low-cost way to enjoy higher power vaping. With a 3 ohm carto/atty you'll get 8W, while a 2.5 ohm carto/atty will give you 10 watts.

On true passthroughs, please use a separate, dedicated, power supply, to avoid risking damage to your PC if/when you get a short. Overall, a true passthrough is a pretty solid device, lasts a long time. There's not much to it. The fail point tends to be where the wires enter the tube -- look for a PT with a good rubber connection there, if possible.

Thanks that seems to be just what I need. I got scared when my twist stopped charging and my regular ego 1100 started acting a little bit sketchy.

I'm not looking for the charge and go style, I just want a reliable piece of equipment that I won't have to really worry about failing on me.

Also, Something that I can use while I'm sitting here in the dorm to displace the use of the other 2 batteries thus extending their lives


Edit: any websites you would suggest to get the passthrough from? Also I will most likely run it through the dorm outlet, I pay enough for room and board as it is!!!!

The one gotcha on a true passthrough is to stay with 2.5 ohms or higher. It's ohm's law, V = IR, so with a 5V power supply, 2 amp maximum current, you need to keep R >= 5/2 = 2.5 ohms. Most people are happy in the 8 - 10W range, so 2.5 or 3 ohms will do the job.

Glad I didn't know this when I used my DCCT's at 1.5 ohm on my homemade 5v pass through cause it worked great

I learned that law in the first week of vaping when I ran my 1.5ohm carto with 4.8v on the twist. with 3.2amps I was tasting burnt plastic in under 2 drags haha.

What happens is that if you exceed the current capacity of the power supply you over-stress the supply. In some cases the device just won't work, in others you'll get a voltage sag until it drops enough to drive the load (the resistance).

"Works great" means it did work, but unless you had a 17W power supply, capable of sourcing over 3.3 amps at 5V, you were over-stressing it.

Works great means I was using it in a vehicle with a 12 to 5v converter
