it was on the news today. not good news for the hobby.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – A faulty battery caused an electronic cigarette to explode in a Florida's man's mouth, taking out some of his front teeth and a chunk of his tongue and severely burning his face, fire officials said Wednesday.
Tom Holloway, 57, of Niceville, was trying to quit smoking so he was puffing on the device Monday night when it blew up, fire officials said. Officials have not publicly identified the victim. But a Facebook page under his name was filled with well-wishers commenting on the injury and database searches matched his address with his name.
"The best analogy is like it was trying to hold a bottle rocket in your mouth when it went off," said Joseph Parker, division chief for the North Bay Fire Department. "The battery flew out of the tube and set the closet on fire."
Parker said fire investigators do not know the brand of cigarette, type of battery or age of the device. It appears the battery was rechargeable lithium because a recharging station and other batteries were in the room, he said.
Parker said he has forwarded information about the blaze to the fire marshal's office to include in any databases on the devices. But Parker said he has yet to hear of any similar instances.
Fire Chief Joseph Miller said the victim contacted the department on Wednesday to thank firefighters and told them he was recovering at a hospital in Mobile, Ala.
Thomas Kiklas, co-founder of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, said the industry knows of no problems with the cigarettes or batteries exploding.
Kicklas said the cigarettes include a small battery and cartridge. The battery is designed to generate an electric charge when the device is inhaled. The charge sets off the vapor in the cigarette tube.
Kiklas cited a federal report that found 2.5 million Americans used electronic cigarettes last year.
"There have been billions and billions of puffs on the cigarettes and we have not heard of this happening before," he said.
Holloway and his family members didn't immediately answer The Associated Press' requests for interviews.

Well there are absolutely NO details listed. We don't know if it's a case of someone trying to use a mod incorrectly or one of these cases of batteries gone bad. To simply state "without a vent hole"......Trust me some of the batteries being used in these things can go up vent hole or not.

A whole lot of difference between something like a Joye 510 blowing up or someone incorrectly using a mod. I personally just hate it made the news. I heard it here on St. Louis news. Why?? Every car accident in the country doesn't make the news, and lots of those people die in.

The vent hole doesn't stop a battery from melting down. All it does is keep the gases from building up.

Put some Black Powder on the ground and light it and it burns. But put the same Black Powder in a Tube and Seal the Ends. Now you have a bomb.

Go back and read my post again. I didn't say that this guy used a Mod that didn't have a Vent Hole in it. What I said is because Batteries can Fail, that is why a Mod Should Have a Vent Hole.

Seems last I recall the only problems were with the mods and unprotected battys(of course I haven't een keeping up for several months), it will be interesting when and if they finally publish the info about the product that exploded. I doubt we will ever find out though, it's just like the media to not follow through.

I read your post the first time. You post could be interpreted by "some" to indicate that as long as a e cig has a vent hole it's safe. (Irregardless of battery type, or using non protected unsafe batteries or whatever) Do you really wanna say that? I'm simply saying vent hole or not, things can happen. I personally wanted to clarify that. Again, what simply might be interpreted by "some"......From some of the questions I've seen here lately we have a lot of new people that do not have any battery knowledge also.

It sounds like this is the official new story based on the real life story from that Thread I posted a little over a week ago "Mod Tragedy" ... off the top of my head I can't remember the location of the Mod explosion victim, but the details are the exact same, so it probably is the same guy ..... and I hope he is recovering.

Not say'n Anything is Safe in Life. Safe is a Term I Seldomly Use.

But I think Most People who know much about Batteries would Agree that Having a Vent Hole is "Safer" than Not Having a Vent Hole. Most People.

Man, must be a Full Moon tonight.

Sir, I am NOT trying to get into a pissing contest with you. I totally agree ALL batteries are safer with some sort of venting hole. Your post took me back bringing up a single safety point when there are so many other possible causes to failures in the battery world.

If you have more information about the incident in FL, please, post it. Otherwise your statement about venting is sort of off the wall in this particular post. A while back Ego's were blowing up while charging. Was this due to poor venting? Since I do not (and most likely never will own that particular device) I do not know. Again this was not to start any sort of contest with you or to argue with you. We're both trying to promote safety and happy vaping here.....OK??

Well my prayers go out to that person and his family, you just never know what, when,or where something like this can happen.I will being making sure that any mod I get or build has a vent hole of some kind.........DOES NOT LIKE THINGS THAT GO BOOM IN FACE.

I totally agree. Things that go bang are always bad. Batteries have been exploding LONG before vaping was invented or even thought of. All safety precautions INCLUDING proper venting must be adhered to.
