News about exploding electronic cigarette in todays Wall Street journal

I read in todays Wall Street journal about an electronic cigarette exploding in a guy from Florida's mouth causing him to loose teeth and part of his tongue.

The story seems kind of vague and unusual because the Fire Department says it was like a bottle rocket that flew across the room and started a fire. It was in Niceville, Florida.

I didn't know the batteries were that powerful.

What are your thoughts and opinions?

Has anyone here ever heard of something like this happening?

Could this have been a modified e-cigarette or is it possible for the standard e-cig to do this?

It's not that the batteries were powerful, but things can go wrong. If there is no vent area on the battery, it can explode. This is more likely with mods. So I'm betting with was either modded, or a really cheap brand.

This isn't only an issue with ecigs though. There have been stories of computers, ipods, cell phones, etc exploding. Any electronic can explode given the right circumstances. But it's not a risk I'm overly concerned about.
