It sounds like this is the official new story based on the real life story from that Thread I posted a little over a week ago "mod Tragedy" ... off the top of my head I can't remember the location of the mod explosion victim, but the details are the exact same, so it probably is the same guy ..... and I hope he is recovering.

You posted about the Colorado man. This guy was in Florida and is being treated in Alabama's burn unit. It was a mod he was using to my understanding. What I DON't understand is why didn't he notice that the tube was getting hot? Something isn't right there. I had one experience with a brand new battery that went into meltdown (PCB protected bat). The tube of the mods got really hot which tipped me off. I ran out of the house with it and got the cap off, shook the batteries out. All was well but still he should have noticed something.

I totally agree. Things that go bang are always bad. Batteries have been exploding LONG before vaping was invented or even thought of. All safety precautions INCLUDING proper venting must be adhered to.

...a voice of sanity!

Lithium ions don`t explode often - but they do explode. They do burn and they do go bang. I really believe that every safety precaution needs to be in play with every PV - mod or not (protection circuits, vent areas that point away from the mouth part, protected batteries, warnings not to use any other but the rated and recommended batteries, etc).

How heartbreaking for this man to have these injuries.

Hope he recovers soon - and completely.

It happened last Monday, according to news reports, so it's a separate, but very similar incident from the one a couple of weeks ago.

Cigarette explosion: Man loses part of tongue when electronic cigarette explodes - OrlandoSentinel.com

FTFA:

"The Food and Drug Administration posted a warning about the cigarettes on its website in October saying that e-cigarettes were addictive, could contain dangerous chemicals like nicotine and might encourage kids to try other tobacco products."

How.....hypocritical of them....

We need to know the brand of the latest blow up.

A lady in another thread had an Ego-T blow up bad.

If this latest one is an ego-T, that is not good news and I would shy away from them.

It sounds like a mod, simply because they mention a charging station and spare batteries.

Not the same incident. This one happened monday.

Here's another strange happening involving a cig lighter. My MIL told me this tonight. Guy went to light a cig then put the cig lighter in his pocket. It re lit itself then blew up. Caught the guy on fire and he died from the injuries. Was either in Kansas, MO, or OK. She wasn't sure which state but close to us. Was on her local news station. I bet that doesn't get as much coverage as the PV will.

I think the press has their timeline wrong - that - or the details were just released to them now.

From the information in all the articles and stories and the threads here - it would appear to be the same incident.

Maybe the confusion is coming from the fact that this story is just now breaking in the news. The man is being released from a burn unit he was transferred to - from Florida to Alabama - this week - so it most certainly didn't happen on Monday.

The person who reported this on the forums originally was a friend of the man and his wife and learned of the incident via phone. It's that poster who is from Colorado - not the victim.

Electric cigarette explodes in man's mouth

This was on a news site here in Australia today. I find it curious that they would run this story prominently as eCigs are fairly sparse here, most people havn't seen one so its unlikely to be of general interest, surely
Perhaps a dirt file on eCigs is being started here by the usual suspects, (or am I being unnecessarily suspicious )

That poor man, how horrible is this awful accident.

I think your being Unnecessarily Suspicious.

just google exploding cellphone batteries, People have died because of it...
but that doesn't make the news often.

e-cigs are just as dangerous as any other electronic device.
it is up to us as the consumer to purchase a device that has the necessarily safeguards built in to prevent injury.
AND, it is up to the supplier to take any device off the shelf that does not have these safety standards...
venting, built in circuitry, and so on.

Too true. My coworkers were talking about this like e-cigs are somehow especially dangerous. I reminded them that ipods, iphones, mp3 players, laptops, and anything that has a Lithium battery in it has exploded at one point.

It's a tragedy, but inevitable. Essentially, we as a society are accepting the risks inherent with these batteries because of the convenience they provide.

If you want to avoid these risks, you can always get a passthrough sans battery... and stick to writing letters and using pay phones.
