a few odds and ends??

I had a few mod building questions:

1) can I solder the neg. battery connector wire on the outside of the connector?
2) What is that black substance I see in most mods covering the switches, wires, etc? Looks like plumber's dip or something to me
3) can I modify the exterior of the battery connector without messing with the proper electrical properties of that little piece of brass? I wanted to solder a couple of fins to the connector and cut a keyway in my box mod so the connector won't be likely to spin. doable?

3. Yup *EDIT* - you shouldnt need the keyways if you use a strong epoxy like jbweld

Just be sure to use high heat, tin your tip and be quick on the solder so you dont create any cold joints
