its not hard to redo coils, but you *must* take the time to really study what to do

I also went and got a Harbor Freight Helping Hands magnifying glass with LED light...so I can see up SUPER DUPER close. Works wonders.

you also (ALSO - DO NOT SKIP THIS PART) must test your newly made heads/coils so that they are proven to be 1) working and not shorting out and 2) within reasonable resistance ranges. Failure to do so can result in shorts, bad/crappy battery usage, or Ka~Boom.

So dont skimp and skip that. A cheap ohm meter is like 20 bucks, from any of a ton of online vendors. This way you know stuff will do what you expect it to do.

from what ive read lately the protank II has more leaking issues than the mini IIs (version 2 of that), and I am considering getting another mini II v.2 or 2 of em...just to have some extra flavors tanked up and ready to vape.

but, there are many different opinions here on ecf about tanks and what works for one guy...might not work so well for another.

So: study. Srsly. And experiment too. Because you will be using different wicks and stuff too. Im going to try to get some hemp fiber to make wicks out of next.

I suppose I should watch some videos on changing coils and read this? And if I skip that part my vape actually has a chance of blowing up? That's scary, hahah. The replacing the coil is the only part that has me worried to be honest.

I'm looking for something with not a lot of upkeep, since I'm never home and usually out and about most of the time. I'm looking at Protanks right now, I'm not sure if the Protanks are better than iClear or not, but if I would decide to go with the Protanks, would you recommend going with the Protank 2 single coil or the Protank 3 Dual Coil? Also, thanks for welcoming me! :)

You say your usually out and about... A twist may not be enough battery time for you... For a bit extra, may I suggest the I taste MVP? You can get it for around 40 bucks if you shop around ( I think 101 vapes has it cheapest, besides fasttech) good battery life, pass through capable while charging.

Don't know how you feel about the box shape. Some like it, some don't.
Good luck!

Shape/looks aren't a problem, as long as it's not a cigarette, that's all that matters to me! I'm trying to keep myself under $100 and it seems like the MVP would fit.

You are not going to blow anything up with an ego twist style battery, unless you start smashing things with a hammer. If your coil is under the devices ohm limit it's not going to work. You'll notice right away because you'll hit the button and nothing will happen. If you happen to have a coil touching something metal in the cup, it might fire for a split second and then nothing or it may not fire at all. As long as you don't mash the button continually when you can tell it's not working you are 100% safe!

Really buy whatever clearomizer you want to start with. I think the iclear 16 would be totally fine, if you want to try some protank minis, or the kanger unitank mini, kanger evod, or the aspire bdc, or anything else that has replaceable heads go for it, there's no 100% wrong choice you can make. If you intend to use a bunch of cinnamon or citrus juices right away go for something glass. If not, then feel safe going with the plastic models. I have run about 15ml of citrus frost, which is orange and menthol through an evod and haven't had any frosting or fracturing problems, so it's not like the moment you put citrus or cinnamon in a plastic tank it's immediately ruined.

Just get whatever you want. If you are an upgrade kind of person, chances are that after the first month you'll want to move onto something bigger with a little bit more power. Then when you have a better handle on what you like and what you want, from practical experience you can get exactly what you want.

I'd just buy this: Ego Twist Silverback Kit

It's super cheap for cyber monday. The Evod's take the same heads as the protank if you decided you want to get one in the future, has 1100 mah batteries, which will give you great vape time and even comes with a bridgeless atomizer so you can taste new juices before you decide what to fill your tank with.

In any event, everyone here has given you great advice, so regardless of what you get or who you decide to go with, you'll be well served.

So that kit would have everything I'd need to get started? I've never looked into the EVOD, but I'll take your word on it. I'm a bit unclear on cartomizers, atomizers, clearomizers, and all that stuff still, but I'm sure that's something google can teach me.

You can put the heads from the protank 2 into the protank 3, but protank 3 heads only fit in the protank 3. So it's cool that you can use your left over protank 2 heads in your protank 3, but sort of cheap that you can't just use the new heads in a protank 2. They really want you to buy the protank 3!

Oh; well that's a plus for the protank 3 then; as long as it works with the old heads that's good; it's not like you'd have to get a special protank 3 head to get it to work.

Glue free would be the important improvement; the dual coil now seems to be an OPTION.

That kit has everything you need, except for replacement heads. But with two tanks, you probably wouldn't need new heads for 3 or 4 weeks, unless you are vaping like a mad man, which might happen depending on your cig cravings,

The iclear 16, evod, protank2, protank mini, unitank, etc are all basically the exact same thing, called clearomizers, and what I recommend you start with due to their ease of use. The iclear 16 is a top coil, that's why those wicks and the coil are at the top of the tank. All the others are bottom coil. meaning the coil and wicks are at the base of the tank. I have used a total of two top coil clearomizers in my life. The ones I used required me to tilt them up in the air when the juice in the tank was low, with any bottom coil device you never have to tilt it, because the coil and wicks are right at the base. Now I don't know if you have to do that with the iClear 16, they are much nicer than the two top coil clearomizers I used. Going with the evod is nice because it takes the same heads as the pro tank 2 and protank mini. So lets say you buy 10 heads, you can use them in the evod, but then if you buy a protank mini, they'll work with that too.

That birdgless atomizer is just a metal tube with a coil inside surrounded by some cotton or similar material. You use that for tasting only. So lets say you order some juice online, package arrives and you have 5 different bottles of juice you never tasted before. Well you can just fill up your clearomizer and go to town, then wait until you empty it and go for a different flavor. But if you have that little atomizer you screw it on to your ego battery or mvp, or whatever and then drop a few drops of a new juice, take a few rips, then drop a few drops of a different flavor, and keep going. It's like a $4 piece of hardware that is handy to have around especially if you plan on ordering juice, and don't get to taste it. It's not something you must have, but it's super handy to have around. If you just use it for tasting juices it will last for a long time.

Regardless of what you decide to go with for a clearomizer they will work on pretty much any other variable voltage device you get in the future. They'll fit on an MVP2, a Vamo, Zmax, whatever. So you'll have them for awhile, even if you upgrade. That's why I say you can't really go wrong regardless of what you choose.

I wouldn't worry about what a cartomizer is for now.

Definitely looking into it! :)

How often would I have to rebuild coil's if you don't mind me asking? The whole coil replacing thing seems like such a pain, is it all that hard?

I'm definitely looking that I can try various different flavors in, without much worry and that makes me want to steer away from the iClear a little bit and go with the Protank II. But if you don't mind me asking, if I were to go with a Protank II, would I want to buy the one with a driptip? And what exactly does the drip-tip do? Does it make more vapor or? Probably a very newbie question.

Protank II it is then. I'm trying a variety so I need something to handle all the different kinds.

Yes it's a pain; You either need good eyes and good fingers like a watch maker, or else you need a good rebuildable system where the handmaking is bigger and not so tiny.

Pay not attention to those young people with 20/20 vision, fine dexterity, and PATIENCE, who say that "It's so Easy!"

Once you settle down with a good glass system, get a pack of 10 atomisers; you will likely need to let used ones soak for a while in hot water or alcohol or something to clean them. They might need cleaning weekly or monthly depending on usage; or they might only last you a few weeks each; for some people a coil might last a few months.. with cleaning. I've kinda lost 2 so far in the few months I have been using them, and both were actually because I was fiddling with them trying to clean and examining how to recoil; actually I havenet given up yet - i even bought a magnifying glass on a stand thingy to help. So anyway none of my coils actually burnt out on me yet over the weeks'/ 3 months I've been using them.

Welcome to vaping.

As others have stated, I would recommend a vision spinner (1300) over the ego twist. Actually two spinners. You need back up. Three batteries are even better

Personally, I prefer a bottom coil tank and like the Protank II mini over the Protank II. The Protank II is a little top heavy on the spinner and ego batteries. I'd also suggest buying a few T3s's clearomizers. The Pyrex tanks are great but they can break. I know from experience. Buy a ten pack of atomizer heads as well. You'll use them and the Kanger heads will fit both the Protanks and T3s's. Also, pick up two chargers. Always have back ups.

Good luck.

Ok, so I know that there is a lot to learn here when you first get started, but let me give you my opinion on everything that i've read on this thread. By the way I know I'm new here, but I'm actually quite experienced in the vape world and know and have tried a lot of different things.

So let's get started.

If you have 100% VG juice, you would want to go with a bottom coil tank, clearomizer, atomizer, etc. Bottom coils will take 100% VG much better, and if you want to switch e-juice flavors, it won't leave the old flavour taste in the tank. If you are looking at getting started and want multiple tanks/clearomizers you can try:
Protank 2, either regular or mini
Kanger T3 or T3s
BCC Mini

these are all bottom coil and all use the same coils that need to be replaced. As for the coils, they need to be replaced every month or 2, for me at least, but i'm using 60/40 PG/VG, so mine will last longer than yours. VG wears out the coils faster. Honestly I wouldn't bother cleaning them and making new ones, their pretty cheap, I would just save yourself the headache and just replace them with brand new coils.

As for batteries, I think the C twist is a perfect starter, I would say get the 1000 twist, but I would also get another 650mah twist. I would get this over the MVP setup, reason being is that when your MVP dies you have nothing to use on the go. You get two twists, one bigger and one smaller, you can use the other while one is charging, so you'll never be without a battery so you dont go back to the bad stuff.

As for ohms, I would go higher rather than lower if you are using higher VG juices, when you get higher ohm coils you need more voltage to power the coil, if you use more power the coil will heat up to a higher temperature, when the coil is hotter it will make the VG juice thinner and thinner, thinner VG juice means good vaping but also will allow your coils to last longer.

So my recommendation for you would be:

1 1000mah ego c twist
1 650mah ego c twist
1 pro tank 2 or T3s or BCC mini or any combination of the three
5 pack of coils- as i said before the tanks above all use the same coils
charger
That's it.

All in you would be looking at spending around 80-100 bucks depending on which tanks you decide to get and where you get them, because some places charge more and some charge less.

So that's about it, with that you'll be ready to go for a long time, lots of vaping with no hassles or worries.

If you want some more information on anything you can always PM and we can talk one on one, or just write here and i'll try to look back at this thread often.

Okay, thanks for explaining all of that to me. If the bridgeless atomizer is as useful as it sounds, it's almost a must-have for someone like me. I definitely see myself going with a mini protank 2, just for the fact it seems to be what I'm looking for. But looking at the EVOD, I might have to get that and then a mini protank 2 at the same time just to see which one I'm more comfortable with. Trial and error seems to be my thing.

I feel like I'll find myself just buying new coils and keeping the old ones till I eventually get tired of spending money and want to fix the old ones. I have horribly shaky fingers, contacts, and the worst patience in the world, so I'm almost not exactly made to mess with those at the moment.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write all that! I definitely see myself just buying new coils, because I'm one of the most impatient people out there. Would this be the appropriate thing to buy when someone says head replacements? (LINK) I also think I might have to get two batteries, only because I could see myself using it quite often, even when I'm not paying attention. I might be mistaken, but doesn't the higher percentage of VG mean better vapor? I'm sort of a fan of getting a good bit of vapor.

Yep those are the atomisers with the coil and wick in it that need to get replaced. Thats the only part of the clearo that needs to be replaced really.

I soon ended up with 6 ego size batteries and 3 or 4 cigalike sized batteries as well as a few of the disposable ecigs when I first started.

Of of my 6 main batteries, 1 ego twist failed when it got wet with juice and I stupidly rinsed it briefly under the tap; figured it might dry out after a day or two but I never did come back.

I had 2 passthrus (usb-510 direct cables) of which 1 has failed now because it looks like the electronics inside the pushbutton has gone bonkers; I'm gonna have to try to fashion my own cable in order to have a good-ole-reliable plugin cable for vaping.

If it wasnt for all the money going into hardware it would make sense spending on sampling ejuices, but right now its been hardware hardware hardware, and go el-cheapo on the juice for me.

So the link was to atomizer heads or is that just any coil head? Confused myself a little bit. I could see myself buying tons of batteries myself. I'm still debating if I want a Vision Spinner 1300 mah or a 1100 Ego-t. I'll probably just go with the Ego-T for the time being and then follow it with the spinner. But I'm not sure where to get a passthrough for a ego-t 1100 mah.

Get at least 2 of everything (back ups and then back ups for the back ups when you can). I use 100% VG in a protank and an ego twist without much problem. You will need extra heads, and learn to clean them, they will need it frequently with the VG. Doesn't take long and isn't hard so it won't slow you down any.

Yes...... Always always have back ups for your back ups!!! :toast:

So the link was to atomizer heads or is that just any coil head? Confused myself a little bit. I could see myself buying tons of batteries myself. I'm still debating if I want a Vision Spinner 1300 mah or a 1100 Ego-t. I'll probably just go with the Ego-T for the time being and then follow it with the spinner. But I'm not sure where to get a passthrough for a ego-t 1100 mah.

The picture in the link was showing about 5 of the atomisers; the coil is inside the atomiser; you can see the wick in the atomisers.

for a passthrough so far i've only bookmarked it on fasttech here:
$5.58 Variable Voltage USB Passthrough for E-Cigarette - silver at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

but of the two i did buy a couple months ago, one died recently; the electronics died; or so it seems anyway; really need a straight physical cable that could be relied upon and a separate optional electronic switch.
