Hi ladies, well, I thought I'd start a topic that may be (or will eventually be) something everybody can relate to.

I started looking at this page one day, and thought........why not?
http://www.pinterest.com/brendayork_art/women-who-rock-the-silver-hair/

I'm in that age where I can and should "just do it." :)

I am / was a natural deep brunette, and it's just harder and harder to keep it. My hair grows real fast, so I get the "halo" around my face now, you know, I gotta touch up the roots so often.

I am a practical gal, I really don't enjoy chasing after vanity, making appointments, going to the hairdresser, etc. I have just never found it enjoyable. I realize it may feel good to some and it feels like "pampering", for me, its more like torture. Pampering to me is having time to go walk with my dogs, etc. instead.

Done it myself too, of course. Just never thought hair dye looks natural... I notice after a while, people's hair has no *shine* anymore. Its just not the same, and the over the counter stuff is not very good .

After checking with my hair dresseer who looked at what I have let grow out (about 2 inches now) "You have what EVERYBODY wants! That really shiny platinum silver.....no yellow, etc."

So, here's the fun part: Anyway, I told a group of friends I was gonna do it. It's almost like going onto the therapist's couch. The amount of societal and psychological stuff that came up suprised me. "you'll look older", "you'll be inviisble" "don't do it!" etc.

or as one woman shared (who ended up looking absolutely smashing when she grew it out): "I casually brought up the subject that I might not color my hair anymore at the family dinner table one night. It was if I said I was running off with a band of gypsies and never coming back....."

Well, you know what I mean. i guess there is a lot of pressure and programming you have to toss away around this issue, huh?

Anyway, here I go........Happy New Years!

(gonna take me about 12 months, my hair is shoulder length. Not wanting to cut it so I will be buying a lot of hats. )

I went "silver" several years ago. Well, actually, i only tried to fight it for a year or so when it got really noticeable. The dyes i tried didn't look right to me, and didn't cover the gray very well anyway. I decided that it was too much trouble, and I've earned every single one of my silver hairs.

It was going to take awhile for the "washable" dye to grow out, so i ended up going to a hairdresser and asked her to put the gray back in. She laughed, and had a great time putting silver streaks in and blending it all together. Ironically, it was the best haircut and coloring I'd ever had.

The only drawback was when i got my license renewed last fall. I've been brown hair/brown eyes all my life..til now. Now my licence says gray hair/brown eyes. It's official. sigh. The DMV didn't even have the decency to use the term "silver"

I've been blond all my life (natural, not from a bottle). Well, actually, it's sort of light brown with blond highlights now, has been since my 30s I guess. I'm 60 now. I still don't have any gray (or silver) hair. My two older sisters (64 and 63) still have hair about the same color as mine. Dirty blond. Dishwater blond. But when my hair eventually does turn silver, I intend to leave it that way. However, if it turns a yellowish, ugly gray, I might consider coloring it. Or I'll just live in hats, LOL

I definitely feel the same way about beauty salons. A couple of years ago I decided to let my hair grow out. I'm too busy/cheap/lazy to keep having it cut every 6 weeks, and I never really found a shorter style I liked. So I now have the same hairstyle I had in high school, LOL

I am allergic to hair dye. It gives my scalp chemical burns. My hair is silver white, no yellow at all. It used to be very dark brown and started turnng white when I was 16. I am beginning to enjoy being one of the few women who don't dye their hair.
You should let your hair grow out. :toast:
