When I first heard about e-cigs I tried doing some research online as the idea sounded intriguing to me. I've smoked for the past 17 years of my life and like most of us here I have wanted to drop the habit for about 17 of those years (obviously not enough, but you know what I mean).

When I started doing some poking around online I got frustrated very quickly at the amount of fake blogs, "news" articles, etc that are obviously nothing more than veiled advertisements for specific companies. It felt nearly impossible to cut through the ad hype and get any real information and feedback on what was available.

A week ago I found this forum, and I have been reading nonstop for the past 7 days. Last night I finally registered... and this morning I placed an order for a 501 starter kit which should hopefully arrive in a few days.

I can't thank those of you on this forum enough for sharing your experiences, your advice, and your resources. You've helped me make an informed decision and set my expectations properly as well.

I don't expect to drop my "analog" cigarettes immediately (by the way, I find that term really funny and have started using it when talking to my friends). But I hope that once I start vaping I can at least curtail my habit.
As the next few weeks go on we'll see how it goes - and if I think I can make the switch completely then I will. I'm trying not to put too much pressure on myself, and ease into the vaping world.

Point is - after 6 months of off and on research I hadn't gotten anywhere and only felt more confused. After a week of reading this forum I feel like a well educated student in the world of e-cigs - and it's all thanks to the members here.

This is a fantastic resource - and I look forward to being able to add to the community at some point when I have some experiences of my own to share.

Thanks for the advice, and thanks to the owners and moderators who keeps this place running.

You all seriously rock.
:)

tell me about it guy...i joined here and cant even start to talk about the help i have gotten from everyone here. it has been a huge help. everyone who has something to offer is more than happy to, and no bs flaming and arguing. its a great bunch of people.

oh, keep digging...you'll find some flames and arguments. Nic has a way of getting people kinda up into each other sometimes, especially when the withdrawals from other analog compounds make them cranky. But you are right, its a wonderful world here in general, and bursting with valuable info, from the noob to the high-tech modder.

justsomeguy, welcome! I'm sure you will love your 510, and you've made an excellent first PV choice. Great right out of the box, and with some simple cart mods it becomes even better.

I would get a 510 passthrough too. You can vape off the computer without using up those batts so much. For $20 or less its a must have. A PCC is also good for charging regular batts on the go. Those two things IMHO are a necessity for any new 510 user.

Have fun, enjoy the vapes, don't pressure yourself to quite analogs too quickly. Some do, some don't, but virtually everyone at least cuts way back without even thinking about it. Like my sig says...

It's in my future I'm sure, but I purposely didn't order one with the intial kit because I want to make certain I'm not just adding a new habit to my life instead of substituting one. Right now I never smoke at my computer (I work from home and I don't smoke in the house, only outside). I was worried that if I got used to vaping at the computer I might still feel the urge to step outside (out of habit) for a 'real' smoke.

So the plan is to first use the 501 in the same situations where I would normally smoke an analog.... if that allows me to cut back as much as I'd like it to, then I'll allow myself to vape in the house.

That's my thought process now anyhow.
We'll see how that changes in a few days when I get some hands on experience.

What's so great about this is that for the first time in my life I am not only not dreading the idea of trying to curtail the habit... I'm legitimately excited about it.

Word. vaping is a whole different experience, entirely. I also smoke analogs only on the porch. Never smoked while I worked, ever. The PT changed that. Now, instead of feeling like going out fro a smoke ever 90 min, or less, I'm vaping at the computer, totally focused, for hours and hours. Indeed, I sometimes have to force myself to get up and take a break. Something about clean nicotine really gets the brain flowing. Far far better than analogs, and that heavy clunked feeling after having one. Still have a couple a day sometimes, but no where near the 20-30 as before.

And I totally agree: I cannot remember the last time I was so excited about something as when I ordered my first PV. It felt like I was pointing and clicking on a button that said "Total freedom and a new lease on life, click here!" And once I got it and learned more about it, and figured out what I wanted additionally, that shopping spree was pure joy. And compared to $7 a pack for smokes a day, at least, its actually hard to spend the amount that would have just gone up in smoke. And 510 gear is cheaper than most PV stuff anyway, so bonus! And the love you suddenly feel for yourself, that those analogs are going to leave, and you'll be better than fine about it, is priceless. Money is an issue with everyone, and there can be considerable up front investment if you want a lot of stuff, but being well stocked means not buying smokes at 7-11 on a rainy night, and never wondering if you have enough cigs left in the pack, and after a while, all that money comes back in savings. Its a beautiful thing. :D

exact same here. my need to smoke served as a sort of internal clock for so long that i lose all track of time while working, now.

Welcome! I think you made a good decision to start with a 510. A lot of us here started with it, and stuck with it. I think it's a great PV.

I basically did the same thing you did - tons of research, joined this forum, found a supplier that was highly recommended with a great price, placed my order... and I went into this with NO expectations of quitting analogs ( it still cracks me up to use that term)

After all the reading and research I'd done, I was pretty confident when my 510 arrived. I smoked two analogs the first night I had my PV. The next day, none... I just didn't have any desire to light up! It stunned me, seriously amazed me. I had people smoking around me and I didn't feel the need to join them, I just vaped while they smoked... and I haven't looked back.

As the days went on, and I still had no desire to light up, I put my last opened pack in a baggie and stuck it in my freezer. It lives there now :)

I did get "urges" and "cravings" for something ... but it wasn't the analog I was craving. I'd just vape and it would pass.

It took a week or so for it to actually sink in that I had unintentionally quit smoking. Me - the die-hard, defend my right to smoke, resigned to smoking forever because nothing ever worked.... quit, dunyons, over it... wow.

Some people quit immediately, some take longer... you'll do it at your own pace, and if you want to quit - you will. I still can't believe how effortless, painless and pleasurable vaping is!

Welcome to your new obsession :D Now I rely on these forums, and I still love to read about it, talk with people here about it, debate topics about it.... and buy stuff. During the first week I ordered another 510 starter kit, e-liquid... and I've now amassed quite a collection of 510 parts, e-liquids... there are so many interesting flavors and combinations to try.

I get really excited when I'm waiting for a package to come too! It's funny :)

Bonus? There is about 20" of snow outside, the roads bite, my driveway isn't plowed yet ... and I don't need to run up to the gas station for cigs :D

Congrats!! Good luck - keep posting - I'm looking forward to reading about your experience and opinion and how your doing with your new 510!

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome - I have to say, since ordering the 510 and reading all these threads I can't wait for it to get here.

Luckily my wife seems to be equally excited about the idea (she is also a smoker, and we're hoping to make this transition together). Since I got my shipping notification this afternoon every 'analog' I've smoked has seemed all the grosser to me...

I know it won't be easy - but I'm looking forward to getting only what I actually want (i.e. nicotine) out of the PV without everything else that comes along with conventional smokes.

If we can do that... then we'll work on stepping down the nic level.

It boggles my mind that there is such a strong anti-vapor movement out there. I guess nonsmokers just see this issue as so black and white. Of course meanwhile methadone is viewed as a normal treatment for ...... addiction (yeah, I know that might seem like a bit of an hyperbolic analogy...but you see the point I hope).

You would hope that as soon as something came around that not only helped so many smokers stop smoking actual cigarettes, but that smokers were actually flocking to in droves to try that the anti-smoking community would embrace it.

What's funny is I think part of the problem is actually the fact that so many smokers actually seem to like vaping. So the nonsmokers are left thinking, well... if they like it so much it must be just as bad as smoking.

Anyhow - I'm rambling.
It's late... and I should be working (deadline in the morning).

I already fear that this forum is going to take over my life.
:)

You are right! It WILL take over your life! Surprisingly you may find as many of us have that it's the SMOKERS and ex-smokers that are more anti-vaping than non-smokers (those who never have smoked). Some smokers can get down right nasty about it, but they are just not ready to quit yet. When you get your e-cigs you and your wife are going to be wanting to show them to everyone. And alot of people will think they are just as awesome as you do, but be aware- some will not. They may have heard some wrong info about them or think you are "cheating" in your quit smoking efforts. It's weird, but don't argue with them. They will come around when they're ready.

yeah dee its usually the smokers who get stupid about it. the worst the non and anti smokers get is - ok, now when are you going to quit doing vaping? - i like it, it keeps me off the coffin nails. most of the smokers i know have either wanted to try or have already started, but there are the few who will insist it wont work, is poisonous, will cause your eyes to implode...whatever. mostly i think they feel like they are losing a member of the club, like when a bar buddy goes on the wagon.
