CARD II.

THE HIGH PRIESTESS

When I lifted the first veil and entered the outer court of the Temple of Initiation, I saw in half darkness the figure of a woman sitting on a high throne between two pillars of the temple, one white, and one black. Mystery emanated from her and was about her. Sacred symbols shone on her green dress; on her head was a golden tiara surmounted by a two-horned moon; on her knees she held two crossed keys and an open book. Between the two pillars behind the woman hung another veil all embroidered with green leaves and fruit of pomegranate.

And a voice said:

"To enter the Temple one must lift the second veil and pass between the two pillars. And to pass thus, one must obtain possession of the keys, read the book and understand the symbols. Are you able to do this?"

"I would like to be able," I said.

Then the woman turned her face to me and looked into my eyes without speaking. And through me passed a thrill, mysterious and penetrating like a golden wave; tones vibrated in my brain, a flame was in my heart, and I understood that she spoke to me, saying without words:

"This is the Hall of Wisdom. No one can reveal it, no one can hide it. Like a flower it must grow and bloom in thy soul. If thou wouldst plant the seed of this flower in thy soul -- learn to discern the real from the false. Listen only to the Voice that is soundless . . . Look only on that which is invisible, and remember that in thee thyself, is the Temple and the gate to it, and the mystery, and the initiation."

Hi everyone,
I used to study the tarot. I haven't in a very long time, so long that I can't even remember which deck. Seems to me it was based more on Greek mythology. Once in a while I go on line and get a reading.
Currently I am reading James Van Praagh. So, I am learning alot about the spirit world. I also read a short book (can't remember the exact title) about the trial and crucifiction of Jesus. So much of this is intertwined. I never really realized it.

My step father was a strict Catholic, not that there is anything wrong with that, but he flipped when he found out I was learning the tarot. Needless to say, he had my mother convinced that if I didn't stop, I would go directly to hell (without collecting $200 lol). So, to keep her calm and off my back, I quit.

So, I look forward to relearning. I find it very interesting. Thank you Kate for starting this.

long form one version at least

(Hear Now the words of the witches, The secrets we hid in the night, When dark was our destiny's pathway, That now we bring forth into light.

Mysterious water and fire, The earth and the wide-ranging air, By hidden quintessence we know them, And will keep silent and dare.

The birth and rebirth of all nature, The passing of winter and spring, We share with the life universal Rejoice in the magical ring.

Four times in the year the Great Sabbat Returns, and the witches are seen At Lammas and Candlemas dancing, On May Eve and old Hallowe'en.

When day-time and night-time are equal, When sun is at greatest and least, The four Lesser Sabbats are summoned, And Witches gather in feast

Thirteen silver moons in a year are, Thirteen is the coven's array. Thirteen times at Esbast make merry, For each golden year and day

The power that was passed down the age, Each time between woman and man, Each century unto the other, Ere time and the ages began.

When drawn is the magical circle, By sword or athame of power, Its compass between two worlds lies, In land of the shades for the hour.

This world has no right then to know it, And world of beyond will tell naught. The oldest of Gods are invoked there, The Greatest of magic is wrought.

For the two are mystical pillars, that stand at the gates of the shrine, And two are the powers of nature, The forms and the force divine.

The dark and the light in succession, The opposites each unto each, Shown forth as a God and a Goddess: Of this our ancestors teach.

By night he's the wild wind's rider The Horn'd One, the King of the Woodland The dweller in green forest glades. She is youthful or old as she pleases,

She sails the torn clouds in her barque, The bright silver lady of midnight, The crone who weaves spells in the dark. The master and mistress of magic,

That dwell in the deeps of the mind, Immortal and ever-renewing, with power to free or to bind. And Do What You Will be the challenge,

So be it love that harms none, For this is the only commandment By Magic of old, be it done!

You would be surprised. There are some large tarot forums on yahoo.

In my experience it's regional as far as acceptance. In certain parts of the bible belt people would tell me I was evil for using them but then would approach me privately for readings.

I used to carry mine on the Bart in SF and people would approach me for readings.

Can you tell us about what The High Priestess means in your deck Mage?

What about you Taz, what do you know about this symbol?

Could you tell us what she means BigEyes?

Is there any music, pictures or other art that you link with this symbol, does it have any meaning in your life?

To me The High Priest/ess is a bit like a librarian, we can ask for references, s/he knows how to get beyond the veil of ignorance but s/he is not a teacher, more a guardian. S/he can help us with our journey but won't make it happen for us, we have to participate and experience or there is no self-realisation.

S/he's not a manifestation of the initial form of the word but has learned how to unravel its mystery.

[S/he] has the integration of the reasoning ability, emotional capacity and social cognition required to function at the level of complexity demanded by current life challenges.
As part of the evolutionary process, humans routinely find themselves faced with challenges that exceed their capacities. This is a natural part of growth and evolution and occurs in all realms of the human experience, whether that is physical, mental, emotional, spiritual or interpersonal.

S/he might say this to us:
My goal is not to get you to change but to empower you to change, if that suits your purposes. Frequently there are choices A and B, in which choice A, though very popular and often judged as correct, leads to unhappiness. Choice B, however unpopular, is a growth choice that ultimately leads to calmness and lack of stress. With my clients and with you, the reader, my goal is to show you such choices. I fully accept your choice and clients' choices to retain unhappiness. However, I do hammer clients over the head with such unhappy choices. For they (and you) are the ones choosing to retain the unhappiness by continually selecting unhappy choice A.

The Priest/ess can show us the book but it's up to us to decipher the meaning, recover the keys and understand the symbols so that we can complete the journey. S/he can give us hints but not spoilers.

S/he guards the secrets of The Wholey Technofoggers (and knows the recipe for Wholey Ambrosia eliquid :p).

Don't take her too seriously and remember that all the world's a stage.

Bigeyes, I live in the bible belt, I have live where it is more dogmatic and more of them. They still wanted their cards read on the quite. Could not get them to understand that it was guidance and not made in stone.
Yup. The same people who told me how evil I was would approach me privately wanting their cards read. Terrified of it and fascinated by it at the same time.

They were also the same people who wanted to tell me what my beliefs were all the time.

In response to your post #30, I am not trying to start a pissing match but...

On page 1, post #3, paragraph 4 kate says: "I'm not going to randomly describe cards, I'm going to take them in order (or what's thought to be a correct order) and try to see if a path opens here or if it's not possible in this format. The story part was written by P.D.Ouspensky. I'm not going to post a link to the full story just yet unless anyone asks for a spoiler."

Just wanted to point that out.
Thanks

The high priestess has many meanings depending upon the situation. She can represent someone who is lying or keeping a secret, celibacy, women who exist without men, esoteric knowledge, looking within for answers, psychological insight, discovering hidden abilities or talents. It's a sign you need to listen to your gut.

here's a good breakdown, imo.
