"The FSPTCA seems to directly contradict its purpose to improve the health of smokers. Not only does it perpetuate the myth that ALL tobacco is equally dangerous, it pushes the idea of addiction itself being inherently dangerous, whether or not the addictive chemical is actually a serious health risk."

(Got the idea for this article from a thread in the ECF CASAA forum!)

Thanks ladies!

I don't think people realize the impact this Act has on smokeless and reduced harm alternatives - which will ultimately affect e-cigarettes. It's like a wolf in sheep's clothing and needs to be watched closely. It should inspire people to make their comments on the page Elaine posted about TPSAC and CTR: How Safe Are E-Cigarettes? « A Public Participation Forum for the FDA Advisory Committee (TPSAC)

It's important that reduced harm alternatives are encouraged and not treated as a threat!

Smokefree Pennsylvania sent hundreds of letters to US Congress (see some cited below), submitted testimony to the US Senate HELP Committee and the US House Health Subcommittee, and sent out several dozen action alerts to my large e-mail list from 2003 to 2009 pointing out that the FSPTCA protected cigarettes from market competition by far less hazardous smokefree tobacco products, misled the public to believe that smokeless tobacco was as hazardous as cigarettes, and urged them to amend the legislation to truthfully inform the public that smokless tobacco products are far less hazardous than cigarettes.
Unfortunately, I couldn't generate enough support to overcome opposition to my proposals from Waxman, Kennedy, CTFK, ACS, AHA, ALA, AMA, etc.
