I really appreciate all the input. I have found a "mentor" for myself but also think this might be a good idea for others. Maybe a place to find stuff like thorn's post. A place with explicit instructions to building only would be great. The current mod section has a ton of info, but it is mostly modders answering questions to other modders about different parts and circuitry questions. A lot of it is very technical and beyond noobs. A place to get started and for step by step instructions would probably be worthwhile. Just a thought.

I've done a bit of semi-pro video editing (it was over 10 years ago, but it still counts, right?), so I'm pretty sure I can make it watchable. I'm well aware of the focus, lighting and sound issues that plague youtube videos, and I'll do my best to avoid them. I intend to use a tripod to keep the camera steady at a fixed distance and to record voiceover audio separately so I can edit out all the "umms and ahs". If I can't get it to look and sound decent with the meager equipment I have available, I won't post it at all.

I've ordered the parts I need from madvapes, so perhaps I can get started some time this week.

A clear video would be great, candre...

Thorn very very nice photo tutorial ~ That actually looks like something I could muster up the courage to try.

I think I've been too focused on understanding how it all works rather than just learning how to put it together.

I have a question about batteries: Is there a reason that no one (at least that I've found) has tried a button cell battery? There are rechargeable ones and I don't know much about batteries being protected (except it has to do w/pressure, overcharging and can explode) but I can't imagine a battery that is used in a hearing aid being too dangerous.

I would like to have a mod that is slimmer than the ones currently out there. Length isn't that big of a deal to me, but I hate how they're so fat. I know there's a GG super slim but it would be nice not to have to spring $150.00 bucks for one.

If there's any button cell rechargeable that could be used? Even if they're only 1.5V, couldn't you use 4 or 5 of them together?

Or am I just showing how insanely ignorance I am on the topic of batteries? 8-o

The problem is capacity. Power density for rechargeable batteries is pretty much maxed out with currently available chemistries. In other words, a battery's capacity is directly relational to its volume. Button cells are small, but that just means they can't hold much energy.

If you want a really slim 3.7V battery, you want a KR808 mega battery. It has about the same capacity as a 10440, but it's about 1mm thinner (though a bit longer). If you want a really cheap 10440 mod, get a lazer. If you want something in between the lazer and GG super slim, there's the VP1.

Took a while to touch up the documentation better and to get the pics online. Just put the two mods up:

PVC Mod (16340/RCR123, solderless)

Minimal Mod (5 parts, 10440)

Thorn, I work at Lowe's (and in no way am speaking for or representing them), and now I'm definitely going to be on the look out for people who come in with this laundry list of materials.

Actually, on that note, you can only imagine my mind racing with possibilities every day when I show up for work...

The venture started out as trying to make a "Lowes Mod" but couldn't go that route having to need the 510 connector and brass fasteners. I couldn't figure out a good way to eliminate the 510 connector to make good ground contact. A small spring that would fit inside the perimeter of the F Connector might do the trick but spring selection is frustrating at "home improvement" stores. Finding the right size is still a chore even at a real hardware store. I thought about bending the F Connector sides inward but haven't been up to ruin an F Connector to give it a try.
