So, I heard about Esmoking a couple of weeks ago from a friend. Decided it sounded interesting enough to give it a try. I'm 29 years old, and have been smoking for 11 years, about 1 pack a day of Turkish Jades (I was so sad when they discontinued them) Using Camel Crush for the last year :)

My first Ecig was a Ruyan Jazz Disposable (menthol flavor) My analogs are Menthol, and I figured, why not try out a disposable before dumping cash into a permanent kit?

I was very impressed with the Jazz. It had a fantastic throat hit, and zero vapor when I exhaled. Not entirely sure the second part is a positive, I'm sort of used to seeing smoke when I exhale.

Jazz impressed me enough to try purchasing the real thing. Bought me an M401 from ruyandirect. I also ordered the Ultra-High Turkish Blend E-juice, and the High Mint E-juice. This is simply because of not doing my research. I assumed that these devices were the sort of thing where you start out at the max nicotine level, and then try to cut down to low or no nic. I also made the incorrect assumption that the Turkish Blend would taste like a real analog.

Started nursing my Jazz while finishing off my supply of analogs. My M401 arrived in less than a week, which was a pleasant surprise. (Never did wind up using up my Jazz, it's still sitting in my drawer as an emergency backup)

Opened up my M401 box, popped in one of the carts in the starter kit, screwed in the battery and took some drags. Of course this was also a mistake, since you are supposed to charge the batteries for 10 hours before use... Oops! Also, the smoke tasted like roasted yak vomit.

Tore open one of my fresh empty carts, pulled out the stopper, and dumped about 5 drops of Turkish, and 3 drops of Mint in there. The goal being to make a light-menthol flavored smoke. Took a drag and got a big mouthful of juice. Bleagh.

Later that day, figured out how to refill JUST the reservoir, and not the whole mouthpiece. Woot!

Smoked my last analog 3 days ago, and haven't wanted one the tiniest bit since. In fact, the though of smoking one makes me a little bit ill right now.

I have now had my M401 for 3 days, and have learned a few things.

1. Gee, you can pop the reservoir section out with a Paperclip. Yay! I don't have to drink Nic juice every time I try to refill!

2. Long, slow, LARGE drags give the best throat hit. Think about twice the size of drag you would take on an analog.

3. Turkish Blend does taste like tobacco, just not BURNT tobacco. If you've ever sucked on an analog that wasn't lit, and it has that sort of sickly sweet flavor?? Yea, that's Turkish Blend.

4. Straight Mint is awesome.

5. I should have started with a MUCH lower nic dosage. I'm using what I have right now, but I have given myself a few bouts of nausea from overdosing so far.

6. E-smoking may turn out to be cheaper than analogs, but I didn't understand the true costs when I started. I assumed that you bought the equipment one time, and your only recurring cost was the juice. After reading these forums, it looks like I'm probably going to be replacing at least one atomizer+battery every month or so. If you are reading this, and thinking about getting started, here's what I'm in so far.

M401 Starter pack, with 2 ejuice refills, and 10 empty carts: $55.00
4 replacement atomizers: $28.00
4 replacement batteries: $40.00
Each refill bottle of juice costs about $20-30, depending on where you buy it. Still have no idea how long each will last, but after 3 days, my mint is maybe 1/10th of the way gone. So about $1.00 a day on juice alone.

That's slightly over $100.00 in startup costs, plus about $30.00 a month to refill.

There's very little point in writing all of this, but I'm bored, and I thought some other new e-smokers would enjoy reading my silly mistakes. I'll probably continue this saga with my experiences with the Johnson Creek Sampler Pack I ordered tonight, along with any other stupid mistakes I make in the next week or so.

Good information and relating experiences is what this forum is about. I would suggest if you want to save costs in the long run and get more consistent performance from your PV (personal vaporizer), try one of the bigger battery manual switch PV's. The batteries last 7-8 hours, are rated at 1000mAh output or more, can be bought about anywhere and only cost $2-$3 instead of $15-$20. These units cost more initially but because they perform so well and the recurring costs are so much less, most see that as an advantage. Here are some links to check out:

superwombat, kudos for taking the time to share your experiences! I think you and I approached this (and possibly other things in life) in a similar fashion. Test the waters to see if it's for us, try to learn as much about it, then make the plunge and when we make the plunge, we go all in.

I've been vaping a little less than a month (I think) and I'm still making mistakes and learning. But that's why it's so great for people like you to post your experiences and what you've learned. I'm sure a lot of new vapers will find your experiences very valuable.

I found your post interesting & will be following your experince. I'll receive my starter kit in a few days and as much as I'm reading still feel I don't know what I'm doing. It's information overload for me...my main concern is taking in too much nicotine since I am a light smoker.

tochay, you are absolutely correct about information overload. While this forum is an excellent source of information, it is definitely over-loading in the beginning, too. I've been in this forum for about 1 1/2 months (spent several weeks lurking before I even decided to take the plunge into e-cigs) and I am just now getting on top of the majority of the information in here. Just keep in mind that there are literally hundreds of very helpful people in here ready to assist you and provide information/advice/support throughout the day, so don't hesitate to post any questions/concerns/confusions you may have. :D

Also, I recently introduced vaping to a friend (extremely heavy smoker) and his wife (extremely light smoker). Since the wife is such a light smoker and is not concerned with throat hit so much, we are going to start her off on a very low nicotine mix and may very well just have her vape a 0 nic mix. You should probably consider going the same route (if you haven't done so, already). :)

Wow, can't believe how long it's been since my first post. There are 2 reasons for this. Firstly, because I procrastinate, and secondly, because it tool FOREVER to get my stuff from Johnson Creek. :)

I'm still quite happy with my M401. As I mentioned in my first post, I ordered the Johnson Creek Sampler Pack. It took a little over 2 weeks to arrive, altho they were kind enough to send me an e-mail letting me know they were backed up on orders.

When I opened my sampler pack, I was expecting to find 10 little bottles of e-liquid. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they include a lot of little extras as well. A nice long pair of tweezers, to move the filler around with, a syringe with a needle on it, that scares me a little bit, teeny tiny funnel and a mixing bottle.

I've tried all the flavors except the 2 "tobacco" flavored ones. I'm not sure if I mentioned this in my first post, but tobacco flavored E-juice is something that sounds good when you're thinking about switching, but the reality is so different from what you think... I've heard that some people like the tobacco e-juice as thier tastes change, so I won't throw it out anyhow. Who knows, I may run out of good flavors and be really hard up some time :p

Toning down to the 18mg strength that comes in the sampler pack was a good move for me. I really like to puff away on the e-cig for hours at a time, and the 36mg juice gave me a stomachache pretty quick.

I've been using the e-smokes for almost exactly a month now. I've smoked analogs twice since then. Once, I bummed some because I left my ecig at work, and once, because I was drinking with buddies who were smoking, and I just felt the urge to.

One thing that I don't understand from my personal experience, vs. what I've read here. One battery lasts me 24 hours easy. I keep hearing about people who have to keep batteries charging and swapping out all the time. The M401 batteries I have appear to charge in about 4 hours, and last about 24 with pretty frequent use. Also in the month since I started, I've had no atomizers OR batteries die on me. Here's hoping I stay lucky.

I feel like I'm refilling my carts all the time, but when I look in the little dropper bottles, there's almost none missing. I expect this sampler pack to last me at least 3 more months, if not more.

I suppose I've rambled on long enough. Good night!

Nice to read that things are going so well for you SuperWombat. :)

As to your atty's not breaking down (yet), and your batteries going a long way for you: perhaps you simply use the e-cig less then others? Though... I am also wondering lately, if it's not so much how much time you are using them; but if it perhaps has more to do with how you use them. Are you a (very?) light drawer perhaps? Light and not so long on each draw? Maybe that could be a reason for a long life of the equipment, who knows?

Hi Superwombat,

Don't forget that you can make strong liquid less strong by adding glycerine or propylene glycol. Let's say you had 5 ml of 18mg liquid. Add 5 ml of vg/pg and voila! 10 ml of 9mg. The flavour will be less strong - but you'll be able to vape it comfortably. Lots of vape, too!:)

superwombat, I really appreciate you sharing your experiences. Like everyone else says, sharing these experiences helps us pioneer through this technology. Personally I enjoyed reading it as I wait for my first dsc 901 to charge and figit in a mere nic fit. I am on day 5 no analogues, no substitute. It doesnt help that my brother is still smoking every 30 minutes, and even though he goes outside the whole house will reek of cigs. I still have to find out if vaping will work for me, which, I feel pretty confident it will.

Just to be helpful... because I made this mistake....

Don't lay flat on your back with the e-cig straight up and try and vape .. lol I did that like 3x and every time I got a mouth full of juice! Eww :p

Gross. I just got my PV and cant imagine doing that with the trial flavors that it was shipped with, nasty haha.

Just got my PV today, just in time, too. I love it! Not really digging the flavors packed. I let my brother try it out, he didnt really dig the taste, but i think he liked the vape. We will see, hoping he stops smoking cigs around the house.

Light and not so long on each draw? Maybe that could be a reason for a long life of the equipment, who knows?

My drawing method is to start out sort of sharply, to turn on the battery, then suck as slowly as I can while still keeping the battery turned on. Takes about 5 seconds for one draw. I don't do any warm-up puffs tho, and I don't generally take more than one draw in a row. Puff, wait 5 mins, puff again.

Regarding the whole "Laying on your back and getting a mouthful of juice" That may have to do with the type of ecig you have, or the way you are filling your carts.

I know in the beginnin I was overfilling, so the liquid would spill over the side of the cup and into the mouthpiece area. This is OK, as long as the ciggie is pointed downward, but if pointed up, it owuld run into your mouth.

I just tested on a freshly filled cart here, and I can point it straight up and draw full strength without getting any liquid. I think my ability to not overfill has just gotten better.

One other interesting thing. I have been using the same 5 carts for the last month. I tend to refill them when they are maybe 2/3rds empty, because I feel like the vapor level starts to drop off then. (Also I use these all night at work, and I never know when I'll get a chance to top off again :p) Haven't noticed any change in taste yet. I may not stress about buying the pillow stuffing that some people here talk about, because if I average 1 fresh cart a week, I think I can afford to just buy replacements instead of restuffing them.

I've always found the mention of "VG" as in vegetable glycerin to be a bit confusing.

As a chemical compound, provided it meets standards for purity, isn't it true that glycerin is glycerin is glycerin?

Well, that's a touch off topic, but since I happen to know the answer, I'll be glad to share.

Glycerin is a compund derived from fat (or oil). The first glycerins were produced from soap and candlemaking, as a byproduct from the animal fats used.

So, no, I'm not sure I'd use just any glycerin to inhale into my lungs. An animal glycerin made from rendered animal waste may not technically be harmful, but it certainly doesn't sound as appealing as one derived from plant oils :D

And as I happen to know some of the answer too, provided it meets USP standards, there's effectively not enough of even a potential difference in the end-product to even warrant concerns.

Like the sterioid family of drugs, which was made affodably mass-produceable in the 1950's due to the ability to modify plant steroids derived from soybeans and yams, they are chemically-identical from those that were originally derived from horse urine and the organs of slaughtered animals, albeit only in minute quantities.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't have any qualms about using any USP glycerin product labeled as such. YMMV.

Well, I just ordered my M401 + extras, but didn't order any extra juice. I'm not sure what flavors my fiance and I will like, so I'm a bit leery about getting a 30ml bottle. 15ml seems OK, and inexpensive enough that I could get several flavors. What size bottles are in the Johnson Creek sampler? How long are they likely to last, in your opinion? I don't think that we'll be sucking on the PV all day, but I also would rather not immediately run out after having dropped 40 bucks. I am attracted to the extras that come with it, so it might be worth it just for that, but I'm still not sure. Would those "mini" cartridges fit a 401? from what I've read it seems like the 901 is the "mini".
Eh, rambling, but if anyone can throw some opinion my way, I'd appreciate it.

Here's the deal

I was in the EXACT same boat as you. I knew I wanted to try some other flavors, but I didn't want to drop $20.00 on a big bottle that I may not even like.

The bottles appear to be about 10ml, I actually don't have the kit in front of me, so I can't give you exacts. I'm not trying to be a JC shill here. I was really happy with the product ESPECIALLY for a new e-smoker, since it includes so many extras that you're likely to want to pick up eventally anyhow (droppers, tweezers, mixing bottles, etc...)

I do beg you to get SOME sort of juice before you throw the things away. The carts that ship with the ciggies in my experience taste AWFUL.
