I have a wonderful mailman. I send quite a few packages weekly and always try to help him load them if I happen to hear him pull up. He even brought me some bulk boxes to make things easier for me and ultimately him. If I'm waiting on a package, I'll tell him and he is kind enough to go a little off route to make sure I get it as early in the day as possible. You sure can't ask for better service than that.
One thing that goes a long way if you print your own postage and request carrier pickup is to make very positive comments in the comment box on the carrier pickup form. My mailman said the supervisors do read those comments and they are factored into their performance reviews. So he appreciates all the kudos I leave for him and I think it sort of comes back to me in better service and him going the extra mile for me.
I know USPS takes a beating for perceived lousy service, but I'll take USPS over UPS or FedEx any day in terms of cost, service, and transit time. Priority mail really does get there in 2 - 3 days, and with the other carriers ground service you are just about guaranteed a week transit time. It's no contest as far as I'm concerned.

I live in a neighborhood of nice town homes.

My mailbox is out on the street so you can drive by it and pickup the mail. My mail person has never seen me. However I can just barely see the mailbox from the foyer on my second floor. I have setup an observation post so I can observe the area, and ascertain the proper moment to retrieve my goodies without her seeing me.

Between online tracking of the package, general knowledge of her arrival time, and visual observation I have yet to be detected.

I tipped my mail person $20 at Christmas because she has to deliver so many damn packages up to my door.

That's pretty top notch. Now I feel like a cheap jerk. ;)

I guess until next Christmas I'll just pledge not to make fun of Cliff Claven in reruns of "Cheers" instead. ;)
