I think it is best for me to reserve my opinion of that letter for the time being.

Wait, I cannot help myself.....

"slobbering cigarette addict "

That ^ is just the FIRST thing that makes me wonder how someone can make mention of the DEVIL, yet have such total disregard for fellow mankind.

I'll get back to this one after I no longer feel the urge to .... nevermind. ;)

After reading your post and the way you pinpointed that discrepancy I thought, "She's a good one."

Then I read the words under your user name.

As for the letter. Somepeople look for the devil everywhere 'cept in themselves.

, people around the “vaper” get uneasy because it STILL LOOKS LIKE SMOKING,

Even though he later lapses into the same old dodge "what about the children." at least this guy isn't hypocritical. What pisses off the smoke nazis is that it still looks like smoking and they would much rather see you die than even mimic something they have taken up a crusade against.

Since I shared his hate letter I figured I'd share the reply I sent him once I calmed down a bit.

Yeah I know I went on my on rant a bit there but this guy really got to me. How dare he send ME an email like this!

All you really had to do was invoke Godwin's Law, but that was much more informative ;)

Well done with your reply! While for practical purposes I am all for "flying under the radar" when it comes to speaking up and debunking insanity, I am all for it. Sadly the "crazies" are the ones who always yell, and they are always heard, with the result they have been the ones "running the railroad" for WAY too long.

I would support the "in your face" vapers over the ones trying to make nice any day of the week because I truly and honestly believe it is the only way we will get anything done. The voice or reason needs to speak up in order to be heard, and you need to be seen exercising your rights if you want to keep them.

Perhaps this man is frightened of the unknown and sent you this missive to protect a perceived danger to his family. If that is the case perhaps he wasn't going to submit the letter in the 1st place because you were the one he wanted to warn away. Perhaps this is the only way he could communicate his opinion.

I've always found in situations like this it is much easier to diffuse the anger by saying how much you care about his opinion and want to be respectful of home and family...what can I do to ease your worry? Once he feels like he's been heard, he's more likely to hear and respect your views. :D Lead...and they will follow your example.

Or....he could just be a mean old man!8-o

Best responce so far... I grew up with a father VERY much like your friend. Quote my father, "The only thing wrong with Hitler is that he didn't finish the job." Etc., etc,. etc...

Instead of emailing, I would have walked over to his house, he is your nieghbor right???, with a couple of cold beers and had a talk. In any debate or discussion the one that loses his temper or goes off into a rant is the one that loses. A simple, "I understand your concerns... but have you considered...." goes a long way to having a civil meeting of minds.

Or he could just be a mean old man8-o

If the worst thing this guy has ever seen in his life is an e-cig, he needs to go out a bit more. I would suggest he go to a hospital and watch a few people in the process of dying from lung cancer from a life time spent smoking tobacco. Perhaps if these people had been offered an alternative to tobacco that had satisfied their needs they would not be in the place they are now in.

Then he would realize exactly what he is wishing for.

As a 20+ year 2 pack a day smoker hacking daily with a smokers caugh, probably stinking like an ash tray (but I wouldn't know because I have lost my sence of smell along with my ability to taste) and paitently waiting for my 510 to arrive so I can hop on the bangwagon with the rest of you I wanted to put my two cents in here.

First off as a Jewish person, I find the Hitler remark beyond insulting, but I won't go further there, sure you all understand.

As a parent (of 2 beautiful children who want nothing more then mommy & daddy to quit smoking) would I be happy if my children became addicted to ANYTHING well of course the answer is NO. I'd like to see my children grow up to lead the healthiest addiction free lives as possible. But the letter clearly states "would I be any happier" (as happier to me does not imply I am happy, just less upset then the other option) I would also not be happy if they became addicted to coffee, but I would be happier if they were coffee addicts as opposed to cocain addicts. So if that is the question then yes, not happy, but happier indeed. If I had to choose between my children taking up smoking cigarettes or e-cigs.... then I believe the one that would make me happier is the one that won't turn their teeth yellow, won't lead to lung cancer and all the other uglies, won't have them hacking up a lung throughout the day and have them smelling like an ash tray.

Normally my politics lean towards being a libertarian, which in short means the governments only job is to deal with foreign affairs and us citizens conduct our own affairs, there would be no taxes and people of means would decide what causes they wanted to contribute to. Kind of a survival of the fitest world! But seeing as we are not living in that world and as long as the government is telling me where I can smoke and what I can smoke, why not close all the McDonalds. I can only imagine that McDonalds is less healthy then the e-cig and I am not so sure, based on my childrens reactions that it isn't addicting! I just don't understand how we are living in a country where children obesity is out of control, the health care system is falling apart and it seems people want to tell me I can't take up a habbit that will not only save me a few dollars, but give me a chance at living a few more years!

If your friend hasn't submitted the letter yet, you should rewrite as a pre-emptive strike. In your letter to the editor, you can call out the stupidity of reductio ad Hitlerum and shoot down all your friend's claims before he can make them. Then submit his letter immediately following so his ignorance will be on display for the world to see and ridicule appropriately. Muahahahahaha!
