I never obtained a kit of any type.

I got the components, the measuring equipment, and bottles.

Started experimenting and discovered the importance of keeping lab-type notes. Then discovered Scubabatdan's calculator was nicer than the one I put together and started using it.

I started to create a flavor I couldn't find anywhere and discovered many others along the way.

I discovered many ways to NOT make good juice along the way and that has been the most helpful part of it all.

A kit is helpful because it has all the components, but certainly not needed. Fairly accurate measurements are important, so a graduated cylinder or other measuring device is recommended. Beyond that, all you need is nicotine, PG, VG and flavoring. Finding it all at the right price in the same place can be a little challenging.

And Hoosiers advice on keeping notes is one of the most important things you need to remember. Even if you are just experimenting and throwing a few things together, write it down! Some flavors take a few days to be at their best or grow on you and getting to the end of a great bottle and not remembering what you put in sucks, trust me.

As usual, Hoosier is correct!

After much trial and error, here's the equipment I consider essential: glass bottles, 3ml (for test batches) & 1oz (for real batches), at least two 1 ml syringes (can be had from your pharmacy -- ask at the prescription counter), a 10 ml graduated cylinder (glass preferably, but plastic works), a handful of plastic dropper pipettes, latex gloves. That's about it. You can get glass bottles here, graduated cylinders & pipettes here, and gloves at your supermarket.

You can buy flavorings alone so you can get whatever you like. Here are my main sources:

Capella
FlavourArt
Perfumer's Apprentice
LorAnn

...and there are more regularly mentioned on these boards. Several vendors also sell these flavorings, marked up a bit, along with equipment & nic base, so if you prefer not to shop at a bunch of different places, you can do it all in one or two. DIY Flavor Shack is a good example of this.

I mix my own juice, just having preferred base and flavor to add.
And that only because I don't trust Flavour Art mixer, while they have very good base and flavorings.
By the time You discover some really good flavor, plenty of juice and flavors vil end up down the drain.
So, why bother? There is planty of ready-made juices to try and discover without any spill and waste.
