A Question for those of you that run 10440 or 14500 Mechanical Mods

Does the small size of the mod make up for the fact that you need to carry around batteries with you? Also, is the performance up to par with, let's say an 18350 mechanical? Or is that asking for too much?

I ask because I feel like I'm starting to go full circle with mods these days. There was the 510 era, then VV mods, and now mechanicals - but I feel like a good rebuildable on a small mod might just be worth it (or maybe I'm wrong).

Hey goonie. I'm getting ready to order myself a mech 14500 mod also. I also wondered if the battery size would be a disadvantage, but I find myself walking around with a mech mod with only an 18350 in it, and seem happy??? The AW14500 is only 100 mah less than the 18350. So, unless I feel the need to have sub-ohm rebuildable on it, it really won't matter.

I've been looking at a 14500 mod for awhile now as well. My concerns is though they are slimmer they are also longer than 18350 mods. My Dingo for example is only 64mm which is I believe one of the shortest good quality mod out there.

That said, I'm still going to go for one if I can find something that is available and that I like.

I've sort of gone full circle with mods and the sizes that I prefer. I've gone from a Silver Bullet and BB from AltSmoke, to a standard size Provari with extension cap, to a quest for a shorter/lighter V-V mods that was more convenient for out-&-about (Smoktech's V-V Gripper and Segelei-Ovale V8), to a mini Provari and VMod bottom fed box mod.

I would rather carry a smaller battery mod and bring a couple of spare batteries with me than I would a full size mod that will get me through the entire day with one battery. Pocketability is the priority there. That's for out-of-the house use. For home I prefer the bigger battery mods.

I will say that I have noted more battery drain since I've begun using RBAs. This could be attributed to my longer draws and more amp drain on the battery with RBAs. Expect significantly shorter battery life with an RBA on a small battery mechanical mod.

The AW IMR 14500 battery is very close in performance to the AW IMR 18350. It's one of the reasons I like 14xxx mods - I personally don't find the differences in batteries to be compelling, performance-wise, until you hit the AW IMR 18650 which does last significantly longer and can withstand a higher discharge rate which makes sub-ohm builds possible.

They are longer than 18350 mods, since the 14500 battery is ~15mm longer than the 18350. I find the proportions of 14xxx mods more visually pleasing than 18350 mods or even 18500 mods; a 14500 mod will usually be equivalently proportioned to an 18650 mod since the dimensions of the battery are almost identically scaled up.

I find it more convenient to carry spare batteries around in my purse than to carry a larger mod around in my hand, but I could see how a larger, non-purse-carrying person might feel the opposite.

As cute as the Precise Plus 10440 is, even Super-T says they're done building 10440 mods because 10440 batteries are "crap". That's a performance trade-off I'm not willing to make.

Great explanation! Makes great sense as well. I don't carry purses being a male and all that but I do carry leather folders so I can see myself having a couple of spare batts.

Not that it's uber-fancy or anything, but I really like this glow-in-the-dark battery carrier. I load it with 4 x AW IMR 14500s and put it in a clear small ziploc in my purse. The glowing really helps me to find it easily, and when I swap out batteries I put the depleted ones upside-down so that it's easy for me to remember what to charge when I get home.

That's quite fancy actually! Glow in the dark battery holders.. Who knew?

Btw, could I ask what attys you run on your 14500s?

I like drippers, so my two faves are the eBaron Dripper Spiral and the Kayfun Mini. The Spheroid's a little bigger, but a really easy to build tank setup that looks nice on almost everything. (They've been out-of-stock for a while, but I believe more will be released later this week.) For the money, the IGO-S is a beast! I've also got a Chris Creations Fatty v2 and a Puff Daddy Revolution 1 which work fine, but I don't think they look as good so they don't get much use. :p

Nice setups! I have a Kayfun Mini otw so I guess I'm sorted for abit! Athough I'm quite eagerly awaiting the new release.

Looking into getting some 16mm tanks for my Diver as well. I think that would look pretty good too.

So, to the guys who are using 14500 mechanicals, which mods are you using? I've been thinking about an Altsmoke Alpha, since there are no "cheap" 14500 mods out there.... Unless I'm wrong and you could shed some light.
For $10 more ($99.99), you can get the Super-T Precise Simplicity, which is a hell of a mod. I love mine and it's one of my top 2; my other favorite is the Sturm mod v2 which is also fantastic but more expensive and harder to find.

The ECF thread on it is here:

I use the Temon from Metal Madness. It was $102 shipped from Greece. Brass end cap and switch. Takes the GP telescopic post for all-brass contacts. Really nice little 14500 mod.

And on carrying 18350 vs. 14500 batteries, a 14500 is the exact size of a regular AA battery. So carrying two or three AA-size batteries is quite easy on the pocket. Performance is identical to any other 3.7V battery; life is slightly shorter than an 18350 but I get a good couple hours out of one battery.

The Alpha may be on it's way out the door...a little bird told me. ;)

I checked mmvapors, and it lists the Temon as a RBA, not a mod... am I missing something?
