great topic, and good points, most especially the OP. Mine was similar; but with a little twist*.

I didn't set out to quit on any particular day either. Once I got my first Ego knockoff and clearomizer, I found it satisfying enough to consider not smoking at all any more. *All I did was promise myself: whenever I wanted a smoke, have a little vape first. I could smoke if I wanted/needed to; but only immediately after vaping first. Within a few days, I stopped smoking completely. I kept the 1/2 pack of smokes around for quite a while; but never touched them.

I did "have" to resort to smoking for a couple of days when I was ~1 month clear. My gear broke down and I had to wait for vapemail to arrive before I could vape again (other than those useless cigalikes). It was a good thing for me, because I found those analogues to be no more satisfying than a vape, and truly unpleasant at the same time. So, it kin'a sealed the deal; helped me to never feel like I'm missing something.

I did spend a LOT of time (months→a year) trying to find a consistently satisfying setup with the vape gear. something that delivered a satisfying (TH/volume) vape every time (or almost), without gurgling, fiddling, hot-legging, flavor fading, juice-cooking-in-a-tank, yada. But that was years ago (gear has improved mucho) and/but it was a rewarding challenge and a hobby, not a "oh, god, I need a smoke" type stress thing.

Hi there, I just wanted to share briefly part of why I had perhaps an easier time than most transitioning from smoking almost a pack a day, to completely off of cigarettes as soon as I had my little mod in my hands.

Just don't make a big deal about it. If you make it a big deal, it becomes a big deal. What I mean is, try not to make it a ceremonious, momentous occasion, turn it into a minor temporary change and it will be so much easier achieving your goal. I think if you say to yourself, "Okay, I'm going to have my last cigarette at 12:00 pm on July 1st!" because then you turn it into a bigger event, making you perhaps more anxious and giving you more trouble quitting.

What helped for me is I was just sitting outside, having a cigarette, anticipating my package and while I was outside the mail truck pulled up, I put out my cigarette, opened the package, filled up my little iclear tank with liquid and started vaping. I was a vaper now. No big deal. I just tried to make it as normal as possible, every time I would normally smoke a cigarette, I would have a vape. After a meal, talking on the phone, after a shower, any time I felt like "Well, time for a cigarette" I would just grab my humble MVP 2 and go outside for a puff.

I think some people psyche themselves out by turning quitting into this exact finite moment in time when it may just be easier to keep a level head and say to yourself "cool, I'm vaping now, no more cigarettes" versus "I NEED A CIGARETTE NOW NOW NOW".

It's just a little tip that I don't really see talked about too often and it seemed to help me, your mileage may vary but I smoked pretty consistently a pack a day for 12 years, heavily if I had a drink in my hand and I've had pretty much 0 desire to have a cigarette. Just remember for those on the fence wanting to quit. If you make a big deal out of it, it becomes a big deal, and believe me when you say this, it isn't a big deal. It isn't a big deal at all. It was one of the easier things that I've been through in my life, no BS! Again, your mileage may vary but if you believe in yourself you will be amazed at how quickly you can crush your cigarette habit. You can do it! If this helps just one person then it was worth posting. Thanks for reading. :D

Spot on! That's the approach that helped me get off the cigs when I first started vaping. I just started vaping and left a pack of cigs in my jacket and just viewed as an alternative form of smoking. In the Allen Carr book he recommends you have one last cig as a final farewell to smoking, but that just made me depressed knowing it was the last one.

Nice thread, my story is different, I actually quit smoking using Champix tablets, they worked well, didn't smoke for months, I finished the course, the trouble for me was when I went out for a drink, (I didn't drink on the tablets as they made me sooooo moody) I'd find myself smoking again, then I'd wake up the next day, not smoke, go out to socialize and smoke again, I could see I was beginning to buy packs of 20 again, I went into my local shop and bought what I thought at the time was a good bit of kit, basically some useless plastic vape pen, I vaped on that sucker all day everyday, sucking as hard as I could to get the max amount of vaper out in a desperate attempt to keep of the cigs but I still missed smoking. The turning point for me was sub ohm tanks, I know it sounds daft but it's true. I started searching the net, found this forum, watch videos and was amazed at the difference, admittedly I dove in head first, learning as I went along but soon picked it up, started getting into the premium juices, falling in love with Isle of custard juices ect... that's when it all changed, it was just so much more satisfying and the taste on these tanks were awesome, Im sitting here with my Segelei 100w plus and Freemax Starre vaping The Milkman at 65w on a 0.25 ohm coil and will never go back to smoking, I actually tried a friends smoke, it was disgusting, it tasted like monkey .... (I have no idea if this is true lol) and the smoke that came out my mouth was pathetic, I picked up my vape and blew some clouds of my tasty juice and smiled, that was the first time I knew, I'd done it, I'd never smoke again.

Time for a vape

It's been cool reading all of your stories, thanks for posting 'em.

I wanted to chime in on this little aspect real fast though:

I know everyone is different, I understand that, let's get that out of the way. For me though, I wanted to keep the pack I had. I still have over half a pack of Kamel Red 100's just chilling in my drawer, I see them every day. I posted in another thread that I want to keep them around as a reminder to myself that I'm a whole lot stronger than some poisonous dried plant rolled up in a box for my cancerous enjoyment. In my short experience, I feel it has been important to keep those ciggies as every time I see them and think to myself, "gross" it's another little victory for me. It's the same thing where on the very first day quitting I forced myself to be around people who smoked (my dad, brother and several friends) to show myself that I had it in me and was stronger than that. These little boosts of confidence really helped give me an edge that I think made quitting even easier for me. They made me realize, WOW, I really AM doing it!

Like I said, your mileage may very. Some smoked more, some smoked less, my point still remains and I think would benefit a lot of people. If you make quitting a big deal, it becomes a big deal. You're way stronger than some stupid cigarette! You can do it people!

I agree completely. My wife still smokes, my analogs and lighter still sit on a shelf and every time I ignore them, I get a little bit stronger.

Thanks for the great post. I am having my husband read it as he gets angry at himself as he can't get completely off cigs.. I keep telling him not to think about quiting. He has got himself down to about 5 a day and vaps other times. He shouldn't be inhaling anything, but with all the anxiety of his health and the treatments, I know how hard it is for him. I also have to keep myself in check as the nerves concerning his health has me on edge also.. I believe in pray and also his Dr.. So with smile everyday and telling him I know it will work, I hope to keep him with me a few more years...

I will pray along with you, Bootiwootsi! May you both live long and happy lives.

I think you have made a great point! That's exactly what worked for me. I just felt like spending money and had been thinking about trying vaping. I stopped by the local B&M and picked up a vv v3 and a Protank and never had another cigarette. No fanfare or nothing after smoking 2 PAD for 40 years.

we went in with "we'll give it a try" the cigs where there..until we wanted them not to be (around day five) around day 7 we were fully off of the cigs and Ed decided (and I agreed) it was time to give away the rolling machine, tubes, and couple pounds of tobacco we had and I boxed up all the ash trays (still havent' given them away my dad made a lot of 'em at various potteries he worked at Wedgewood, Hall China, etc)

but if we wanted a cig then we had a cig until we didn't want one..then after that first month ok ...it's been a month now..we're really NOT smoking and dove into vaping, learning, upgrading gear, sampling juices, etc.

but good point OP..we went in with the attitude that ANY decrease in smoking was a good thing...if we got off the smokes even better but no expectations, no disappointment yah know?

My first few weeks were crazy. I impulsively bought an 808 cigalike, and never smoked after. I never intended to quit smoking, had given up trying. I grieved-- a little bit more intense, and I would have written letters to all the tobacco vendors and companies apologizing to them for having quit smoking. I kid you not. I developed an obsession with cigarette lighters, and discharged it with lighting candles and incense.

I over-nic'ed, and visited my doctor, who suggested that with my inner-ear problems, I might have a lower threshold for those symptoms. [Although I had recently had a massive chlorine dosage from an indoor pool] Immediately switched to no nic-- soon after, had a half hour experience of depressive pit. Later had to rebalance my meds, got off the low dosage med for borderline high blood pressure. A while later, I noted mental fogginess, and went to 3 mg, which is where I stay.

Wow, a lot of good stories here, I'm not sure what I can add.

I had tried the 'Blu' and while I would not rate the experience/taste all that bad, I was mostly used to 'replacement' in the form of 2mg mint flavored nic-losenges. I still regularly use these at work. I was used to not physically smoking for >8hrs a day already.

My self imposed choices at home became clear: smoke outside on the back patio (there's still a pack+lighter sitting back there) or remain inside and use nic-losenges or vape.

Besides being a constant PITA I was running the batteries down on the 'Blu' faster than they would charge. The local vape shop set me up with a 'clk!' (4-6hrs use on a charge) which has a pass through function - however given that I'd be vaping very regularly (not exactly "chain vaping" but a few puffs every few minutes) being tied to a cord kinda sucked, I used the 'Blu' while the 'clk!' was charging.

If the 'vaping solution' is not enough I can always step onto the back porch and light an analog up. The 'clk!' was replaced by replaceable battery tube mods.

Much like the others, I never have set a 'quit' date. Made no big deal over the transition and simply weeded out smoking as a nico delivery method. What may of helped me was that none of the flavors I was using did not even have a hint of tobacco flavor.

I LOVED SMOKING and really didn't want to quit. I had to though. I didn't think vaping would work but I had to do something. 4 days later I smoked my last cig.

I found a cig case with a few cigs in it in my nightstand drawer - now sitting in plain view as a testament to what I have accomplished - there's absolutely no temptation (any cig would taste nasty now, but those 4+ month old RYO cigs would be extra nasty I'm sure!)

lol i still have a couple bags of pipe tobacco and ryo laying around

Yeah, I have a few lbs (unopened) of D&R and several boxes of tubes... I don't know what to do with them

Donate them to the local Salvation Army shelter. The residents will love you. Maybe offer to set up a vaping class. too, and PIF your unused vaping stuff.

I was smoking 2 packs of 100mm Marlboro Reds a day. I smoked for over 40 years. I did not intend to quit smoking. I started vaping so that I could have something to get me by when it was cold outside. The older I get, the harder it was to sit outside in the cold every time I wanted a smoke. Within a couple of days, I realized that I was already down to 3 or 4 smokes a day. I came to the conclusion that this just might work.

I started with an EVOD Mega and about a week later, decided that it was working, but not meeting my expectations. So, I ordered an iStick 50w and a Nautilus. I also ordered supplies to start making my own juice. After a few weeks, I was smoke free. I upgraded to the Subtank Mini and finally found that satisfaction I was looking for. Granted, it's not for everyone, but like Rixta, sub-ohming really did it for me. So, if you are still struggling to get that satisfaction from vaping that you need to put away the cigarettes for good, you may just need to step up a level in equipment.

Would I recommend the Subtank Mini now? No. There are better tanks out there. I like the Starre for prebuilt coils. I like the Zephyrus for build your own coils.

Wow, that's quite a Boomerang up and down. Sounds like you did great getting through all that. Keep up the great work! So you vape basically a 3 mg And don't have any need to go higher on stressful days? If so that's great!:)

if you still enjoy tobacco flavored liquid you can make a pretty good extract out of that ryo tobacco. Just do a simple vg heat extraction on it and you can vape it as is or mix it at about 30%. It will have a small amount of nicotine though, usually 3-4mg but thats not much if you're used to the high nic liquids still.
