I originally tried vaping to stop smoking about 1 1/2 years ago. That didn't pan out.
As of this past Tuesday, I'm back. I looked around the internet and asked some shops questions and I went out and bought two mods; Innokin's Cool Fire II and I, for myself and my wife respectfully.

So first, here is what we have and then you can read what I'm experiencing.
Wife: Innokin Cool Fire I
iClear 30B tank and 2ohm coil
PG liquid
She is fine. Tank is untouched since Tuesday when it was first filled.

Me
Innokin Cool Fire II - set to 8.5w
iClear 30B tank (4 of them) and SmokTech PBC V1 {all 5 tanks using 2ohm coils}
PG liquids in 3 of the iClear tanks and VG in 1 of them and in the Smok Tank

Tues and most of Wed, everything was going fine. Then Wednesday night, after changing out flavors in my iClear 30B tank, I starting to get nothing but burnt taste. After making the mistake of trying to clean the heating element (turns out the wicks are REALLY picky and upsetting them results in bad gurgling/leaking) and trying to do some dry burns and re-cleaning. No change.

After discovering the issues this can cause with the coils (previously stated), I bought more replacement coils. So Thursday I went through 3 coils. I had some leaking problems mixed in, but they were all burning. I was originally using PG liquids and I would let them soak for an hour before use, and even turned the tank a couple times while it was resting upright, to make sure the fluid really got into the short wicks. No change in luck.

Last night the wife stopped at the smoke shop with a thought. She grabbed me a new tank ( a SmokTech PBC V1), tip and spare coil for it. Filled it up and everything was fine last night. So, before bed, I cleaned and tried the tank and it's components, and put in the new coil and swapped in the VG liquid. Let it soak all night. Today, it's burned.

I've gotten burnt taste and pulls and that's it. It's F'ing gross.

The only tank that is being used is the one that the wife filled on Tues and hasn't touched. SO, it's me! What the heck am I doing so wrong that everything is burnt tasting?

I my experience with iClear bottom coil tanks 8.5 watts will definitely lead to a bad burnt taste.

In fact I can't run my 30S tanks with the 2.1 coils at anything over 6.5 watts without getting severe burnt taste. Try knocking your wattage down to 6 and bump it up in .1 increments from there. When you start getting that burnt taste back off about .2-.3 watts.

Innokin must reckon the B should be OK at 8.5watts. ??

No, he has the Cool Fire II which is VW. It goes all the way up to 12.5 watts, which will burn any clearo I've ever heard of.

The theoretical sweet spot for most retail clearos is right around 6 watts, give or take about a half watt. Any higher and you start burning off the flavor, a lot higher and you just burn the liquid into the wicks.

Sounds like a wicking issue...if juice isn't getting into the coil it will burn the wick when you fire.

Personally I have never had much luck with those kind of long wick tanks. I think the iclear 30 has entirely too much wick and that tends to cut off the flow of e-liquid.

My suggestion would be to (I hate to say it) get yet another tank and I'm going to personally recommend the Kanger Protank 2. I have several and rebuild the coils myself using cotton wick. They perform wonderfully! Rebuilding the coils is a piece of cake and saves a ton of money in the long run.

Umm, the iClear 30B is a bottom coil tank.

That 8 watts hit me too, but I am not familiar with the i30s; 8 watts would be ok for a dual coil; but for standard commercial single coils, normal power range is 4 to 6 watts.

I vape alot in the 3 to 4.5 watt range on regular protank coils.

Once you use a coil for a while, if it gets some gunk on the coil, you will start getting a harsh toxic burn taste from the gunk burning; at that point you really have to take that coil out.

To clean the coil you have to dry burn it and burn off that gunk; when you dryburn it you should recogise the burn smell as what you were vaping;

after that for bottom coil tanks you need to rewick the top wicks enough to prevent the thing leaking like a pipe.

When you bottom coil tank is leak, one easy way to check and to also keep it going, it to just hold it upside down so it doesn't leak.

I got a Cool Fire II and I was not happy with the iClear 30b that it came with. It doesn't give the greatest flavor and I tried running at 8.5 or 9 like you and got the same burned taste. Didn't get that at 8.0 or 7.0 but the flavor was week. I got a Kanger Aerotank I put on it and run that at 8.0 and it is 100 times better. My brother did some research and the iClear 30b doesn't review well the iClear 30s does so I would get a different tank, Like I said my Aerotank works great on it at 8.0

IMO it's unfortunate that you had to come back to vaping using those tanks. I have 2 that came with my 134 and MVP and they're so inconsistent I don't use them. I would recommend a Kanger Aerotank or the new Nautilus by Aspire. They are both great tanks.

Edit: I run all of my clearos between 8.5 and 9 watts without issue.

Seems about just about every avenue for a solution to your problem has been posted, but instead of getting scientific here I will just get back to the basics. Don't get mad for such a simple statement, but I am just trying to help. When you press the button on your battery, are you waiting for it to heat up before you draw? Or are you not drawing much but letting the vapor flow on its own? I found it really depends on which juice I am using, but some seem to cause wick burning faster as I guess they vaporize quicker than others and if I wait or draw to slow the wicks burn. Try drawing a bit harder or at least pay attention to how you are drawing the vapor in. Hope this helps.

Hey guys,
Thank you for the responses! Sorry I haven't been back yet, finishing up finals for this quarter tonight.

The lowest I can run on the Cool Fire II is 7w. I haven't changed from the 8.5 since the Cool Fire I the wife uses is at the same setting (that one is non-adjustable.) One of the only things I haven't done is take her tank and put it on my Mod but...at this point I'm a little worried to ruin her vape lol.

I'm looking at the Nautilus as it happens. Incidentally the main appeal it has going for me is the 25mm base, which should snug up nicely size wise to the top of the trim ring on the CF II.

Talked to a few friends around town that have used the iClear tanks. Only one other person had the issue I had and he said he just swapped tanks. Although they all thought that 2ohm coils on 8.5w would've been fine.

and when I draw on the tip, I give it a half sec or so to heat up before I pull. I'm still doing mouth hits in the fashion that I was smoking so they are short draws as well.

I'll see if I can find a Nautilus in stock local this weekend and give it a shot. Nothing against the Aerotank suggestion, but the Aspire tank also suits my size/look preferences lol.

From what I know, even the cool fire 1 is runninh at 8.5 watts which is working fine with the iclear 30b. I'm using the cf1 and 30b for about a month now with some problems here and there but very minimal.

Burnt taste is generally due to the wick not soaking in the juice enough. I tend to do dry puffs about 3 to 4 times before vaping. You'll tend to see bubbles floating from the bottom coil as the liquid saturate the wicks.

Gurgling and leaking problem lies in the airflow and the center chimney. After screwing the tank together, just place a napkin at the bottom connector of the tank and give it a good shake to take off excess juice in the coil area. Also, be reminded to ensure that the coil airholes are aligned with the tank bottom connector airholes.

Hope it helps.
