Sad times indeed back then. A family friend was a hemophiliac and received a bad batch of blood. Once it came out as being the 'gay plague', his life was ruined. Almost everyone knew he was a hemophiliac but it wasn't as widely known that the blood supply was potentially infected/transmittable. He was a good guy but even my family sadly turned their back on him. I remember getting a pretty good whipping for asking 'why can't I talk to him?' and being told he was a dirty man that would 'do something bad to me'. I was young and didn't really understand any of it so I pressed the point a little too much I guess. It was eventually discovered that he contracted it from the blood but I guess everyone felt too foolish to admit their mistakes and he eventually committed suicide about two years AFTER everyone knew it was blood borne... Fear can make the most rational person do unthinkable things to their fellow man.
