Hello everyone,

I've been having what feels like a fairly trivial problem, but is hugely affecting my vaping pleasure, as well as my supply of kanthal.

I'm currently trying to get a setup working on my A7 atty using cotton from cotton balls rolled tight (as in, damp cotton strips squeezed with as great a force as my hands can apply). Unfortunately, all of my attempts at getting a good, solid, well-working wick have been thwarted. I feel like the Cotton Gods are trying to force me to commit seppuku with silica.

Here's my method - I unroll a cotton ball, strip half of the parallel fibers off, roll that into a wick, wet it lightly and roll it tight. I then wrap my coil around the cotton and a needle so that it slightly depresses the cotton. I usually get a resistance between 2.4 and 3.0 ohms. After this I insert my coil into the atomizer with the wick at a slight angle to the air-hole (as in, next to the air hole, but half way between a horizontal and a vertical wick). I fully saturate with e-liquid and begin to vape.
My coil diameter is about 3mm and my coil spacing is about 1.5mm. I'm using Kanthal A-1 32AWG.

After about ten pulls in this configuration above 6.5 watts my wick begins to burn.

If anyone can help me figure out what's going wrong, it would be much appreciated.

Rolling the cotton that tight will lessen its wicking capabilities. I very lightly roll the cotton (I don't wet it) and feed it into the coil after it has been installed in the device. Works like a charm. Better yet, after a few days, I dry burn until the cotton is easily removed, light the coils up a few times and install new cotton. I have been using the same piece of Nichrome for over a month and just changing out the cotton once a week or so.

Your coil is too tight on the wick. Use a 3/32 drill bit or a toothpick. Make your coil. Put it on. Then stick your wick through teh coil with a needle. Tweezers help here too. Make your wick smaller then you think it should be. Soak it and let it sit 15-30 minutes. It will swell and fill the coil.

Ill try and find a couple threads with pics I used to learn this. I had this same problem, my wicks would swell and not let juice get to teh middle of them, then burn.

EDIT: this one shows great way to make the coil. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/reos-mods/373841-rba-reomizer-build-photo-tutorial.html

This one is all about cotton. with some good pictures http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...355501-different-cottons-different-wicks.html

The main thing is cotton swells ALOT. You dont need anywhere near what you think you do.

EDIT 2: Also with this method. You just remove the wick when it gets gunked or burnt. Quick dry burn to clean the coil. Thread a new piece of cotton through the coil and soak it. Coil should last you quite a while.

I just tried this out with some sterile gauze I had left over from breaking my toe, and all I can say is wow(!); the flavor was intense - similar to my genesis with SS wick, but...more lively, I guess. I don't know how to describe it.

I can't wait to try different configurations and experiment with different atomizers. It appears that when the cotton bug bites, it bites hard.

Thanks again!
