Walrus had also posted a link to an unprotected rcr123a 3.0v 1000mah... Would anybody recommend using that or stay away from unprotected batts?

Unprotected batteries are fine for use in PV's with a little precaution. The problem with unprotected batteries is that they can over-discharge, and over-charge. Over-discharging shouldn't be a problem because you will more than likely change them out when vapor production starts to trail off. Even if you smoke it dead, the batteries will more than likely still have a charge in them, just not enough to fire the atomizer. Over-charging? Well just don't leave it in your charger for three days. I've had mine in the charger for more than a day with no side effects.
