My procedure for cleaning a new atomizer is as follows:

1. Totally disassemble.
2. Place metal parts in one container and plastic and rubber parts in another.
3. Soak metal parts in Everclear.
4. Scrub with cotton balls and q-tips.
5. Rinse thoroughly in a fine sieve.
6. Add metal parts to the other container.
7. Soak all parts in hot, soapy water.
8. Scrub.
9. Rinse thoroughly.
10. Put all parts in a third, clean container.
11. Soak in hot water.
12. Rinse thoroughly.
13. Dry each part with paper towel.
14. Allow to air-dry for a couple of hours.
15. Reassemble.

PG and VG are both alcohols and so have strong solvent properties. Some materials (oils) are more soluble in PG and VG than in water, even soapy water. So why not just use a plain PG or VG wipedown/rinse or three, and leave the Dawn for the dishes? Stronger alcohols (from jack daniels to everclear, etc) may make the "buna" (nitrile) O-rings swell, resulting in leaking.
