Not that kind, you boozehound. :toast:

Instead of rinsing out tanks and atomizers under hot water, would soaking these parts in isopropyl rubbing alcohol be an effective way of cleaning them?

I figured they'd dry out quicker and get more thoroughly clean with an alcohol bath but I have some concerns about the alcohol degrading rubber and plastic components.

No, use vodka or everclear or another pure grain alcohol. Rubbing alchol is not for human consumption, that's why it's sold in drug stores not liquor stores. It may degrade rubber components. I soak my wicks in vodka(cheap) or everclear, I've never thought of putting the whole clearomizer in alcohol. I have poured vodka into cheap clearo's, it hasn't seemed to hurt them.

nosaint has it right for sure.

I find the cheapest highest proof vodka on the shelf at the liquor store to be perfectly acceptable for this purpose.

Rubbing alcohol is usually 65-70% alcohol and the rest is a denaturing agent like acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, or methyl isobutyl ketone. I've read a few things that seem to indicate you don't even want to rub that stuff on your skin if you can avoid it (funny they call it "rubbing alcohol" when in fact it really isn't safe for extended exposure)... and labeling requirements for denatured alcohol don't require full disclosure of what they use as a denaturing agent.

You're better off with booze.

It's easy to find rubbing alcohol that contains only isopropyl alcohol and distilled water. Any other ingredients don't use it.

I've been using isopropyl alcohol from the dollar store to clean my Kanger T3 heads, and it's been doing just fine. Of course I dilute the alcohol with water, then after soaking, I soak them for another 6 or 12 hours in just water (hot at first). Then I let them air dry for another 6 to 12 hours. They've always worked just like new for me.

Labeling requirements for rubbing alcohol are through the ATF instead of the FDA. They don't have to tell you what denaturing agent they use. And, if they are complying with the ATF regulations, "rubbing alcohol" can't be more than 70% alcohol by volume.

And that's my cue to leave this thread.

Everclear will do the job, for sure. It cleaned me out pretty good the night I got promo'd to Corporal. Cleaned out my memories of the last half of the night, too.

And no non-alcohol gunk to get in there. No colors, flavors or other crap in there. Get the 191 Proof. It's like 96% alcohol and 4% water.

Hmmm didn't realize that, but yes my 91% says isopropyl alcohol and not rubbing alcohol.

Sooo... one quick question, does the vodka works with both clearos and cartos? how long do you let them soak? Thanks in advance.

Yes... but with the caveat that clearos are usually pretty sensitive to solvents and other chemicals. Some have proven more resilient than others. I'd suggest you clean one you might be thinking about throwing away anyway so it's no loss if the clear plastic can't take alcohol exposure.

I know with my Everclear baths, (my tanks and tips... not me!!! LMAO) I don't need to do more than say 2-3 minutes of soaking and swishing.... followed by a quick wipe through with a paper towel. Does the trick for mine everytime! :toast:

Thankfully it should be small quantities required to clean right?

I use an old babyfood jar about half full of vodka. I drop in whatever selection of attys i have that need cleaning. I swish them around for a minute or so and then let them sit for an hour or two. then I swich them for a minute or two.. and that's it. I take them out of their vodka bath, blow them out and shake them out and let them sit for a couple of hours in a warm window cill.

Filler cartos will need a really good blow out and extra time to dry out (maybe a full day).

Thanks for the input. I just added Everclear to the grocery list. It'll be interesting to see if my wife actually gets it for me when she goes shopping tomorrow.

Down here in FL, the Everclear was actually more expensive than the cheapo vodka...not sure where you are, but worth checking the price difference ;)
