I found this semi-old spool of kanthal in my drawer that was unopened, I threw out the packaging so I don't remember what it the company was but it was something along the lines of "Tuff #24 galvanized kanthal resistance wire" but I built a couple of coils and they all short, I've tried it on 3 diff attys and still shorts, I made sure its not touching any other metal or anything. It was a dirty but i washed it with soap and water and its not grimy or greasy from machine oil but parts of it aren't shiny like wire is supposed to be they're gray-blackish. Is that causing the problem.

Uhh not familiar with that type of wire and unable to find any mention of it anywhere online but if it truly is galvanized you most certainly DO NOT want to be building coils out of it.

Galvanized metal plus heat equals toxic gases.

Enough kanthal to last years is only ~$6 shipped, i would avoid the mystery wire if i were you.

Best of luck!

Are you sure its kanthal? Interweb searches arent showing this stuff for vaping.

I'm honestly having a hard time figuring out what the heck he even has, various searches on the internet lead in a ton of different directions.

The point is, if he even vaguely remembers it as being galvanized he shouldn't be using it, just to be safe. Kanthal is just too cheap/easy to get.

Shorts don't matter, resistance doesn't matter, finding out if your wire is going to release EXTREMELY TOXIC gases when you heat it, that matters.

Galvanized means zinc coated. You cannot use it for vaping, just cannot. It will always short. Galvanized and kanthal should not be used in the same sentence. Very interesting, what uses can galvanized kanthal have?
