Am I the lone idiot?

I smoked my last analog on June 2, 2008. Although the cravings for cigarettes had slowly diminished over the last year and a half, they never disappeared. I always said, half-jokingly, that if they ever invented a non-deadly cigarette I would go back to smoking in a heartbeat.

Then, a couple of months ago, I heard about PVs--I don't even remember where...

Now I vape. I started out with the 0 mg. juice, but that was like smoking air, so, now I vape with nicotine--vapor is nice, but I needed the throat kick.

I was a light smoker (1/3 pack a day for my last year of smoking), so I am now a light vaper. I only vape at home. I leave my PV at home when I go to work, just like I did with my cigarettes.

After about 3 weeks of vaping I've noticed that my formerly vague desire for a cigarette when I'm around smokers has pretty much gone away. They seem so dirty and nasty now. vaping has filled in my longing for "smoking", yet at the same has turned me completely off the desire to ever start again. It's a strange, but beautiful paradox.

Anyway, I was wondering about a couple of things:

1. Are there many/any of you that had successfully quit smoking, yet started vaping anyway, or am I the one lone idiot?

2. What exactly is the nature of a nicotine addiction? I can go for many hours without vaping and not feel the need for a vape (I usually vape after breakfast, then once more before work...then when I get home at night and off-and-on until bedtime). Was I craving nicotine all these months after quitting smoking, or was I craving the act of smoking? What am I craving more now?--the nicotine, or the act of vaping?3. Is it possible to get a decent throat kick from 0 mg e-liquid?

Sorry, I know that's more than 2 questions...

1 - Quit for 8 years but never lost the yearning for a smoke at certian times. Starting vaping and love it. Would still never go back to smokes.

2 - I don't find any addiction after 10 months of vaping so I can't help you on the nature of the addiction and so far, no, I can't find any decent throat hit without nic.

I think the nic has a lot to do with throat kick, then again, hookah has somewhat of a throat kick. They don't really use nic. Is it the tobacco maybe? Hmmm... studies should be done to figure out how to create a no nic with throat hit.

As for analogs being gross after smoking e-cigs for awhile... well, even when I smoke analogs, their gross, they've felt that way for years now. I wanted to quit, but the withdrawals I got just wouldn't work for me. Now with e-cigs, life is a changing.

That is similar to myself. I was never hooked on smoking at all but I switched to PVs for all of the reasons people like them (no smell, less harmful, cheaper, etc.)

Oh I was hooked on cigarettes--no doubt about it.

Good to hear that I'm not alone, and that you have no desire to go back. Yeah, a 0mg throat hit would be a dream come true.

Glad to hear your success story. :)

I've wondered the same thing. I don't think I'm addicted to nicotine because I had such difficulty inhaling for the last year before I quit (about a month ago). I like to make my own juice and the sweeter the better, and it's without nicotine, and although I get loads of Vapor I get zero throat hit.

But....when I vape Mint from Rocky Mountain Vapor I get a terrific throat hit. It's got 18mg nicotine but I wonder whether that is responsible for the hit or whether it's the Mint flavor, which is strong. I just don't know. I think we'd have to vape the Mint both with and then w/o the nicotine to know the truth of the matter.

I wonder if some nice person whose got Mint with and without nicotine would do that experiment and let us know?

I don't think the desire to smoke and the desire for nicotine are the same thing. There are many motivations for smoking besides nicotine addiction. The PV does a good job at addressing most of them.

Real cigarettes have some intense feeling in the lungs and throat which increases as the cigarette gets hotter. In my mind this somewhat unpleasant feeling or taste lets you know that you've had enough. Once you reach the end of the cigarette you know that you're "done." I don't think this is entirely related to nicotine. It is more likely CO, or CO2.

Nicotine patches or gum don't provide this effect.

As for e-juice I think it depends on the flavor and device. Some flavors are so smooth and sweet that it is impossible to get the small overdose you desire.

I find the "Marlboro" flavor more satisfying as is can become "too much" and turn me off the way real cigarettes do. Other flavors such as "Virginia" are very nice, but don't have that effect even though the nicotine level is the same. (24mg)

Try smoking too many cigarettes too quickly. The feeling and taste gets bad. You will feel like you've smoked though.

Try a juice with stronger flavor and thicker vapor and see if that helps. I would avoid increasing the nicotine level unless you feel you must.

One of the first juices I vaped was 0mg Arctic Mint from JC. It has a nice, sweet minty flavor, but zero throat hit. For my M-403 I use prefilled 18mg menthol carts and they have a nice throat hit. I find that anything less than 18mg is just not enough throat hit. So I'd say the "kick" definitely comes from the nicotine.

I still start the day with an analog, usually stop by the house for another in the afternoon, have a pipe or a cig before bed. I never had any desire to quit smoking and have up to this point vaped mostly in my cab where I am not legally allowed to smoke. I guess I am a sort of hybrid vaper, if I had to choose one or the other I would choose the PV but what I am doing now is working so well I ain't inclined to change. I love a long vape at 4 in the morning in my cab with my coffee and the news on the radio, I also love a fine pipeful of quality tobacco in the evening. Wish I knew how to extract nic and flavor from a good virginia/perique pipe blend and mix it up for vaping, that would be the cat's a@*!
