So, which popular batteries are of which type? Seems like a good idea to include that information in this thread. I have a lava tube type VV mode. I think it has an 18650 without the nipple. Is this an unsafe battery?
You'll hear a lot about AW batteries on ECF. Nothing magical about them. Andy Wong gets batteries from Panasonic or Sanyo or anyone else he can find to sell him batteries that meet whatever standards he has and puts his label on them. There are a small handful of actual battery manufacturers in the world. Sanyo and Panasonic are probably responsible for 80-90% of them. Everyone else is just a label, including AW.
Best thing to do is get a Panasonic or Sanyo. The battery you got is most likely an IMR. It could be made by anyone. That doesn't mean it's unsafe. It more likely means it didn't meet the specs of the top bin Panasonic or Sanyo, or it was made by one of the other smaller manufacturers and was sold before someone else put their own label on it.
IMO, the safest batteries are the Panasonic or Sanyos labeled as such. There are a million AW counterfeits and no way to stop them. Andy Wong doesn't have the big guns to stop them like Sanyo and Panny does. Panasonics are made in Japan. That alone gives them a leg up, IMO. In an 18650 size, the Panasonic CGR18650 beats the AW in every respect, including capacity, performance and safety. And the odds of getting a counterfeit one are lower than getting a counterfeit AW, especially if you buy from a reputable vendor. Vendors can buy AW's from a million different places. Sanyos and Panasonics have a longstanding and tighter distribution network. When you buy a Panasonic, it's probably a Panasonic if you don't buy it from some fly-by-night website.
