Hey guys,
I have some spare time on my hands these days and I've been wanting to get my HAM license. Anyone in the area that wouldn't mind sharing some expertise in some way, shape or form? Even if you don't live in the area, I wouldn't mind a IM buddy to teach me the ropes. I'm a fast learner being a linux user and all.

I don't know where to start and it seems getting your license isn't convenient even if you know everything :S

First of all great on deciding to get your ticket. Its a great hobby , I have been a ham for a good number of years and have had a ball.
Here are a couple links that may help you out to start.
Technician Class License Prep | AmateurRadio.com

HamTestOnline - Ham Radio Exam Courses and Practice Tests

The second link you can practice what you have learned. also you can go to QRZ at this link
Callsign Database by QRZ.COM
and on the top in the blue menu bar click on resources and there are a few links there that should help.
also the ARRL at American Radio Relay League | ARRL - The national association for AMATEUR RADIO will get you started also.
another one W5YI : Resources for Amateur & Commercial Radio
and last but not least
WB6NOA Study Guides - W5YI
I also just sent you a friend request if I can be of any other help
