Hello all,
I thought I'd share with you all something that I have been trying lately. After getting my Menthol Crystals the day before yesterday and making my own Menthol concoction. I noticed while driving in the car, vaping while the windows were down, my knuckles and eyes were feeling quite mentholated as air from the A/C blew over the mentioned areas. I knew my hands were not contaminated, since I thoroughly washed up and controlled the environment that I was mixing in.
This lead me to believe menthol was being carried in the vapor in a much more different fashion than that of an analog. Solutions, solutions.....I was not liking the mild sensation of Icy Hot on my skin.
So I figured I'd try something that are common to analogs. As us menthol smokers know, menthol is not only in the tobacco, but in the filter too.
So I decided to try makeshift filters from cotton balls and add concentrated menthol liquid to it and not the e-liquid. This worked okay to reduce the Menthol sensation I was having while driving in the car with the window up, but never eliminated it.
Anyhow, as said, it worked okay....but worked great as a way to make what ever liquid that was non-menthol into a menthol flavor without contaminating the atomizer!
This idea is great for someone:
Who like occasional menthol's, but doesn't want to bother creating an entire bottle no matter the size.
Wants to increase menthol experience on an occasion.
Who worries about accumulated crystallization of the menthol of the atomizer or prolonged contamination of menthol on the atomizer and batting.
Please keep in mind, handling Menthol Crystal can be hazardous. Especially as a concentrated liquid. You should be experienced enough with filling carts before trying this. Leakage of liquid through makeshift menthol filter can be extremely intense to your lips and mouth.
Here's what I used and the experimental cartridges:
Listed below are some things you may or may not need.
901 cart
M401 cart
"Super Mini" RN4081 cart
Water 3.7ml (Doesn't matter, never makes contact with atomizer)
Menthol Crystals (4-5 1 inch shards)
Cotton Ball
Tweezers
Toothpick or Paperclip
Steps:
1) Prepare warm to moderately hot water in a small bowl.
2) Add Menthol Crystals the liquid should look murky(like fat free milk)
3) With tweezers, drop cotton ball into liquid and wait till fully saturated.
4) Take the saturated cotton ball out of the soaking solution and set it aside in a safe area to air dry. (optional, hair drying if impatient like me)
5) Once dried, it's time to portion the right amount to cartridge.
Depending on which cart you use. I recommend the filter be applied behind or in the inner cart.
Here is the M401 inner cart that holds the batting(carts may vary) Fill the backside(as shown) with an appropriate amount of the mentholated cotton as much as possible with out restricting too much airflow. You will need a paperclip or toothpick to tuck and stuff the cotton. Do not pack it tight.
Here is the RN-4081 cart. I initially pulled out the inner cart and packed the cart with a portioned amount that you would find on a cotton swab. Because the inner cart was raised further up into the atomizer, I began to have concerns with the batting getting burned by the atomizer's bridge/wick. Although I didn't experience any burning of the batting while using it this way the first few times....I rather not continue to take my chances.
My particular cart is in fact three pieces. The inner, the outer, and the backing.
I pulled the backing out (as shown below) with a little finagling with a toothpick, and stuffed as much as possible with a paperclip, with out restricting the airflow to a great degree. Good results were shown this way since the cotton was concentrated with dried menthol, but not as intense as the other way around.
The DSE901 cart was the most questionable one since it did contaminate the unreachable chamer in the cartridge. So unfortunately, menthol will last in the cart for sometime as if it were in the liquid itself. This one was the most simple to do, since I didn't have to tuck. Just pull off as much that could fit with out making it too hard to draw vapor or reattach the inner cart.
I'm not sure about other carts, since these are the only ones I have and use right now, but you get the idea, just apply it to your cart.
So there you go! Just prepare particular carts to be menthol and you don't have to worry about making dedicated menthol liquids or contaminating your atomizer or batting when you do decide you rather have a different flavor!
