Where to start? Okay: I've wanted to quit smoking for years, decades really, and have tried to quit hundreds of times. Sometimes I've lasted as long as two or three days, more often it's that many hours. Tried the patch and gum, both with some limited--I cut way down--success, but never totally quit and never lasted very long.

A neighbor started smoking ecigs about a year ago and never went back to tobacco, so I started looking into it. At first I was put off by the expense, I'm retired and on a pretty limited budget, and ecigs just seemed too damn expensive. But I continued to get more and more disgusted with the smell and the mess and the morning coughing fit and all the rest. Then I ran across ECF and, after a fairly steep learning curve, realized that I may be able to quit tobacco and at least break even if not save some dough.

So... I finally bought a $30 starter kit then a day later a pass-thru and a couple 10ml bottles of juice, all of it online from MyVaporStore. Why them? I don't really know but I think it was because I saw a video with some chick touting the kit and she looked interesting in an edgy/trashy sort of way so I went to the site and here I am except, naturally, I bought the wrong damn kit--I swear, women make me stupid--and had to go back and order the pass-thru and some juice.

I got the kit and the other stuff on Monday, 10/2, and haven't had a cigarette since, still have a pack and a half of menthol lights 100s and a lighter in my dresser drawer. Of course now I have a bunch of questions, a BIG bunch. Here goes:

  • After filling cartos and fooling with the gear, how do I get this filmy goo off my fingertips? The damn touchpad doesn't respond right and I have to get up and go through a whole hand washing deal and don't want to, especially if I'm using my laptop while I'm messing with this stuff.
  • I'm using an 808--finally figured out that's what I got--and wonder if these stick batteries have to be recharged more and more often as you use them. The first day or so, they seemed to last for hours but now one of them started blinking at me and I'd just charged it last night and only used it for my typical morning smoke-fest.
  • There seem to be compatibility issues--much like the situation with my ex-wife[that MODERATED]--can someone briefly explain what goes with what. For a new guy it all gets pretty confusing: 510, 808, eGo, 905, Joye, Lambo and on and on. What is what and what goes with what? There's probably a page here that explains all that, but damned if I can find it. I'm getting too old for this stuff. Would prefer just a simple explanation.
  • I like the two piece system but am thinking about getting clear cartos (clearomizers?) next time I order, both so I can see how much juice I have in there and so I don't have to fill up so often. I don't think I have any choice in the voltage of the stick battery, but do I want 2.4 or 2.8 ohms and what the hell difference does it really make? Do I even want clearomizers, should I just stick with refilling cartos and getting new ones every month or so?
  • If I were to watch "What's New .....cat?" now, would I still think it was as funny?
  • Do these stick batteries have a memory like some batteries, do I have to let them discharge fully or can I keep them topped-up? I have read that Lithium-Ion batts don't have a memory like NiCads do, but for all I know the site where I read that might have been pushing Li-ion batteries and I don't know what's what with these ecig gadgets.
  • I believe that the cartos and batteries have to be replaced regularly. Since I was a pretty heavy smoker, pack-&-a-half a day since Eisenhower was in office, does a 5-pack of cartos and one new stick battery a month sound about right? I'm figuring that with that and maybe two 30ml bottles of juice a month I'm still gonna be spending way less than I spent on smokes.
  • Has anyone else gotten real vivid and REAL weird dreams when they first stop cigarettes, like this one I'm getting with Erin Burnett in a French Maid outfit slapping a riding quirt on her thigh and telling me I need discipline and that she must be obeyed? Of course that was the night I smoked myself half sick, sitting at my computer sucking on the pass-thru every 10-15 seconds or so until I got cross-eyed and dizzy and realized that once again I'd overdone things. Too much is not enough still seems to be my default approach to new pleasures.
  • What's inside these things? Are there any pics or drawings that show exactly what's what in them? It looks to me like I could push the guts out of either a battery or a carto but mostly I still wouldn't know what I was looking at. The few threads I've read read like they were written by EEs for EEs. What the hell, I was an English major.
  • Can you overfill cartos, how do you tell if you did and what happens if you do? I've been filling them by squishing them down in a rubber cap thing half full of juice. How often should I fill them?

T
hat's enough for now, but I'm sure I'll be back with more questions. I guess I gotta post four more times here before I can sit at the grown-ups table.

Mostly I gotta say this: this is the longest I've ever gone without a real cigarette and if I can last six more days with what I've got--two sticks, six cartos and two 10ml bottles of juice--I will have broken even and every day after that is pure profit. And mostly it's due to this site, despite the fact that it took me a few days to figure out enough of the abbreviations and acronyms to make any sense of what I was reading. Boy am I glad I didn't go for one of those "free" offers when I was first looking around.

I am new so I cannot answer all your questions but I did find out that I got the 11mah ejoy. got it last night and it is still rocking. was told to kill it before i did the first charge. LJ's Smoke shop in Edgewater. said the battery under a full charge should last from a day to 2 days depending on how much i use it. mine has tanks and I fill it up and it is seeming to last most of the day. don't know about What's new ..... cat but I bet the Pink Panther would be a hoot. BTW I want one of those dreams. I do know if you have a ejoy or a 510 based system you just pour the juice in the tank cartos don't know when I was researching the tank system made more sense.

fpaull:
- You can get the "flim" off with a lens cleaner wipe if you don't want to get up. But you really ought not to be getting so much e-juice on your hands. But since you are...the lens wipes, or you can keep a damp paper towel close by maybe?

- You ought to get around 3 hours vaping if you got a 78mm. If you got something smaller, then it'd be more like 2 hours on a charge. If you are a very heavy vaper (sounds like it!) you will likely get less. To get longer between charges you would need more milliamps per hour...650mAh or 900 mAh...and up. Rule of thumb (but not completely accurate) is 100 milliamp equals approx. 1 hour vaping. Figure on knocking off an hour "just because" if you vape a lot.

- 808's is short for KR808D-1 and refers to the type threading the device and cartomizers you are using, have. The KR808s have a "male" connection and the cartomizers have a "female" connection. The 510s are a different threading and the cartomizers will be "male" while the batteries will be "female". 510 is generally compatible with eGo type devices (also considered 510). Joye, Lambo and such are product names. eGo is also a product name and is the most widespread...made by Joyetech....but there are lots of "knock offs" of high quality that also are called eGo. They are 510 threaded, as mentioned. The "vGo" is supposed to be KR808 threaded...but some Chinese makers get confused and call their eGo clones "vGos" by mistake. Check the threading...that will be your clue. 901s are interchangeable with KR808 ...for the most part. A 901 atty will fit on a KR808 battery as a rule.

- using the clear cartomizers and/ or tanks is a choice you'll have to make based on your personal preference. They are not for me, but many people like them. Personally I like a high quality (not cheap) cartomizer, and I can refill them MANY times with the same juice flavor. Plus they are cleanable if you wish. For me, they are the most practical, least "fragile" and "fiddly" and easiest to work with.

- I have no idea. Never did think What's New .....cat was very good.

- You can top off li-ion batteries. They do not have a memory. In fact, some claim that it's good for them to try to avoid discharging them all the way all the time before recharging. YMMV.

- with what you've said about your vaping habits...think of a regular sized cartomizer being the equivalent of about 6 to 10 cigarettes. That is cigarettes NOT packs! I vape about 6 to 7ml. a day. I smoked 2 to 3 packs of cigarettes a day. Yeah. A lot. So figuring on 7ml. a day (best to be pessimistic isn't it?) I go through about 210 ml. a month. Actually it's more like 180ml. but it pays to have more than you need than too little of what you need.

-The weird dreams is a common phenomenon. They'll ease up. It's a good idea to lower your nicotine level a couple of hours before bedtime if you are vaping 18mg. or more. Nicotine is a stimulant and can disrupt sleep. Just drop down to a lower level at night.

-I really don't feel like getting into what is in these things. Hopefully someone else will. Too involved.

- Yes you can overfill. If you do either you will get a gurgling sound when you vape, or the vape will be really really hard to draw. You can blow out excess juice from the center tube. I keep a bottle around to blow into so I can recycle when I overfill. Of course I use only one flavor. You can always just blow into a tissue.

Welcome to ECF. Don't stress...just go with the flow. Lots of people here to help. Some will try to sell you on getting a variable voltage and tanks and such. Do so if you want. Personally I've been there and done that and am happy with the equipment I now use...see the list under my banner. :)

OMG I love you! Welcome to ECF :D

I think fourthrok said it all. I don't know anything about carto's either, but I do like my Vivi Nova tank. I fill it and vape away without having to fill constantly and the vape tastes much better than the cartridges that I had. I can also see if I am getting low so I won't have any dry hits. Dry hits, to me, taste peppery. Nasty stuff....

ps: they don't like swearing in the forums, so you might see your original post change a little. Brilliant introduction though!! Love it!

Thanks for the kind words. I could use a little help, I wrote and thought I posted a reply to fourthrok--a big help that guy, if he is in fact a guy--above but can't find it. I did the same thing with that, that I'm doing with this which is to click on the curved-arrow Reply link(or whatever you call that) in the blue stripe below the post, then I typed my response in this box, just like I'm doing now. When I was done I clicked Post Quick Reply down below. Now it seems to have disappeared, gone up in vapor... so to speak. 'Sup with that? I didn't even cuss! Where on ECF is there something that tells all the ins-'n-outs of using forums.

Using these forums is even more confusing than figuring out what all the abbreviations and acronyms for ecigs mean. And all the icons! It's like some kind of elder abuse--which, I might point out, we take ver-r-ry seriously down here in Florida. It's actionable I think, getting some poor geezer so confused he starts sputtering and slams the lid of his laptop down on his brand new KGB8080-D-1b.357 personal vaporizer.

Oh, well, I'll figure it all out eventually... if I got enough years left.

I agree - awesome introduction... Welcome to ECF! :)
If you don't mind the size, I would get yourself some larger batteries and the clearomizers. (They also make those rebuildable, so you can chuck just the head when they get old and save money instead of throwing the whole thing away. I have largest KGO batts and can go 8 hours or more without charging or filling. Your mileage may vary, of course, but you still go longer than what you're currently using.
Good luck!

Your options are a bit limited with cartos when using an 808. If you stepped up to something like an Ego Twist you would have a lot more options (plus VV, fixed voltage kind of sucks).

You could get an 808 to 510 adapter, but the small batteries can't handle LR cartos which you want when running lower voltages.

If you want a longer lasting 808 - and it sounds like you might, you could try the Smokeless Image X2. These are 808s so will be compatible with your 808 stuff - to answer another question you asked. :) The X2s come in 650, 900, or 1300 mah. Basically, 100 mah equals about 1 hour of actual vaping time. The smaller batteries you have are probably between 280-320 mah - so will last from 2-3 hours moderate vaping. The bigger X2 batteries obviously will last longer. They are regulated at 3.7 volts.

SI cartos are bottom coil, and Kanger make bottom coil 808 cartos too. SI also do clearos in 808 thread. There's nothing wrong with fixed voltage.

It will get easier. ECF might have been acting up, your connection might have been lousy. Lot's of factors to take into consideration when you think about it. The way it sounds, you will have no problem finding your way around here. Explore, make new friends, make a few enemies J/K <---Just kidding. It took me a few weeks before I felt comfortable with the new terminology that is tossed around in here. Quick tip in regards to some terms: Do you see the dotted line under ECF? Hover your arrow over and a little explaination will come up. These are all over the place to help us newbies out.

Hi Fpaull
Bullette from the Treasure Coast here...just south of you my Florida friend.
Now I started out with those small e cig batteries too. And congrats on not smoking for a few days!
I switched to a Kgo 1100 mah battery & man, what a difference!
The voltage is higher so my vape is warmer & the battery lasts me all day on a fresh charge.
Check it out at Hoosiers Ecig Supply (other vendors too). It's only about $45 for a kit with 2 batteries.
Keep comin back. We're glad you're here.
BTW. I really enjoyed your first post. Erin Burnette huh? Don't forget the "Money Honey" Maria Bartaroma. LOL

Your KGOs come off the charger at a higher voltage - but I can't remember what now. 4.2v? If the cig size is unregulated then the 1100 will make a big difference.
Not so sure for regulated tho - since the KGO will drop down anyway.

And here I was...anxiously checking the forum to see if I got a reply from @fpaull !!! I was crushed. All that typing and 'splainin' for nuthin'??? lol!!! Oh well. Wish I knew what you said fpaull. Guess I never will now.

It's a very lucky tiny percentage of people who land on the "perfect" set up right out of the gate. There are pluses and minuses for both the KR808 system and the 510 system. The 510 stuff is more plentiful and there are more options for them...but the KR808 has better battery life and durability. Not that the 510/eGo types don't. But there is a difference that might make a difference to you.

Many people like the ViVi things and tanks and whatnot..as I mentioned. For me, personally, the cartomizers fit into my lifestyle better and are not as expensive or "fiddly". I don't observe any "muted" taste, or anything negative with the polyfill type cartos. But then, like I said, I use a high quality cartomizer that does cost a bit more than the run of the mill types. I don't like Boge. Everyone is always going on about Boge here, but they taste funny to me. Really weird aftertaste. I don't like it. And they don't hold up. But maybe I just got the dozen or so boxes during the period of time when Boge was having QC issues? I don't know. Don't care to try again, though. I like the Smokeless Image Volt cartomizers (bottom coil) and Kangers. I also like the CigEasy Elites (for KR808) and the Go-Go Cartos. For the 510 system I prefer the eGo Mega cartomizers in single coil (EMSCC) by SmokeTech, but sometimes use their dual coil Megas. The only thing I don't like about dual coils is that the cartomizer gets WAY too hot too fast for someone like me who puffs like the crazed piano player in ...... Madness. Dual coils run hotter...warmer (dare I say HOT?) vape. They are a bit harder on battery life and the burn through juice faster. But they are very popular. For an occasional thing...I like them okay in short spurts. Just don't like burned fingers a whole lot. Oh yeah..the eGo Megas are going to look strange on a "stick" or cigalike 510 battery. I use the larger mAh stuff that is more like the size of a Sharpie...or even bigger.

Oh yeah. I am a female. I had NO idea my avatar picture was so... androgynous?
