And then there is the double standard:

Yet, instead of taking into account the overwhelming response, the DG delegitimised public opposition, painting comments as the result of citizen “mobilisation campaigns” organised by tobacconists. You’ve got to ask yourself: if pro-ban activists had been effective at encouraging the opposite response, and in such strong numbers, would the DG have treated that exercise in democracy as dismissively?

Talking about this directive to an ex smoker had the exact same thing alleged to me. All objection to the directive would be from organized pro tobacco campaigns. And anyway ecig don't work as I hadn't quit yet.
Thick as a brick some people.
Or it could be that the propaganda is so effective that thinking that doesn't fit the choir isn't possible. Quiting isn't easy and some self conditioning is necessary for cold turkey to work.

Who would be shocked if NRT gets approved for long-term use before the EU directive is approved?

The plan appears pretty clear to me...
1) Get NRT approved for long-term use
2) Get competing products banned
3) Big Pharma laughs all the way to our funerals

When we complain, they'll just say that now we can use patches or chew gum as long we you need to.
And the public, not knowing any better will jump right on board, because it will sound so right.

They have this all worked out, and the only thing that can stop them is the truth.

And then there is the double standard:
Elaine, that sounded just like what the FCC did to ham radio. When they were considering dropping the Morse Code requirement for worldwide radio operation, they asked for comments. Many of us "old timers" commented that Morse Code was a tradition and that the requirement for it, would keep the riff-raff off of the HF (worldwide) bands. They dismissed our comments, by stating that those arguments had been made before and therefore were not valid. What?
