just wanted to post up some pics of the smoktek dual coil 1.5 ohm cartomizers. sorry if my pics are a bit blurry. camera sucks

cartomizer 003.jpg

this is the heating coil with the poly fill unwrapped. the 2 dark parts on the carto are 2 additional pieces of material (not quite polyfil) that are wrapped around each of the heating coils.

cartomizer 006.jpg

little better picture

cartomizer 008.jpg

here is how it looks with those 2 pieces unwrapped. it gets VERY crusty and gummy in there, as you can see from the 2 black streaks. this was almost like tar when i was inspecting it. its no wonder these things are hard to clean or get much use out of.. they hit great but yeah mine last ~3 days if im lucky

cartomizer 010.jpg

and heres what it looks like inside when youre firing your coil. i did a dry burn on these and it cleaned off whatever gunk was on them. but with them being wrapped up in that material, definitely makes it more difficult to do.

my thoughts on this design are only flawed in 1 area. i dont care for the material they use to individually wrap around the coils. its pretty thick. not like polyfill at all. more like a very thick paper towel. im sure that the designers took this stuff into consideration though *shrug*

hope these at least entertained some of you

Great post. The inner wrap wicks juice from the outer filler to the coil. You can unwind the inner wrap from the coils and clean it or replace it with a strip of gun cleaning patches cut to size. By gently bending the wires you can access it easier. Once you dry burn all the gunk from the coils you can reinsert the inner wrap around the coils by wetting them in the juice you intend to refill the cleaned carto with. They wrap much easier and stay in place when wet. Bend the wires back in place and rewrap the outer filler and you have a new carto. Nice pics. Thanks.

Mohawkx, you are a positive mine of information! Gun cleaning patches?? Living in the UK (and not possessing a gun) this is something I'd never have thought of in a million years!!

Are these patches made out of cotton? I have a small collection of gunky dual coils I've been promising myself I'd 'do something' with for ages, the best I'd come up with was to try using some old bits of thin, worn bedsheet but have never got round to actually giving it a try. Is there any particular type or brand which you would recommend?

The tip about wetting to make it easier to get them into place makes good sense, too - thankyou for yet another really useful post; I've seen quite a few of yours now, so the thanks are well overdue! Thanks also to Vhal for the pics, and of course Katya for the link which brought me here.

You guys in the UK can still have some sporting rifles so patches should be available. I buy Outer's patches but if you take the inner filler wrap from an old carto and compare it to the gun patches available you'll come up with a close match. Gun patches are especially made to absorb fluids.

Oh, and another tip. You don't have to go nuts trying to wrap tiny inner wraps around the coils just cut one that will fit both coils with one piece and wrap them both at the same time. Then rewrap with the outer filler and you're good to go. With a dry burn to remove all the caramelized gunk they should be as good as new.

Thanks very much indeed for the extra info (and tip), Mohawkx. I did find several sellers on eBay (good old eBay, they are useful sometimes!) who can supply gun cleaning patches in the UK as we don't have any sporting goods stores close by. I will have to get hold of some and give this a try. I will go for the ones that say they are pure cotton, I reckon that scorching cotton can't do me too much harm when they start to singe - as I'm sure they inevitably will!!

The black inside is one of the reasons I went to a CE2 as they use a "glass-ceramic" style wick with no fill (although the rubber cup in CE2's can melt a bit on occasion but that can be fixed easily and the rubber is most likely the same kind used in the hoses of coffee makers so it's probably heat resistant)..well not the black gunk so much but when I took apart a few poly-filler or wrapped cartomizers I would notice some melting sometimes..I figured melted poly-fill isn't that great to inhale..I'm sure it's better than smoking a cig by far though as it's only a little...
