I think it's more a matter of size. An avatar must be no larger than 150 x 150 pixels for regular members and 200 x 200 pixels for supporting members. The last I heard, animated avatars are allowed, but animated signatures are not.
The avatar I attempted, and was denied, was exactly 150x150. The auto response was that I was not allowed to use animated avatar, paraphrasing.

They made me get rid of my dancing bear..........:(:(:(:(:(

That is just not right. Dancing bears rule. Seen them, danced w/them damn I think some came home with me after one show, I am not really certain. I know animated avatars take extra space but they are cool.

Yes, they are cool, but with over 49,000 members here and growing every day, I believe management wants to keep a tight lid on bandwidth used.

I understand the bandwidth issue. That's why I would understand the rejection based on file size. If that's the issue it would be nice to have an appropriate cause for rejection stated. Oh, and of the members, only 14.7% are active ... based on today's figures. That percentage doesn't change rapidly. I'm just nerdy enough to have been paying attention for a while, LOL.

Hmm, well... if anyone wanted to peruse the forum rules, they would see that animated avatars are allowed if they are the appropriate dimensions and file size, and if they are approved by me beforehand. I'm much more likely to approve them if the animation is subtle, rather than one with flashing colors or such that would make you wonder if it could induce a seizure. :p

The main problem is that they are an accessibility issue that affects everyone - except those aged between 12 and 19 maybe... We don't care about the bandwidth. They drive a lot of people crazy and ruin the website for many.

A principle of accessibility is that you don't have any flashing, blinking or moving elements on a page unless the visitor selects it, for maximum accessibility (ie to avoid causing problems for some people). Of course, there is a conflict here, with modern web resources being expected to be all-singing all-dancing multimedia experiences. Nevertheless, for websites that want to appeal to the maximum audience size, including those with a preference for less intrusive pages (whether for health reasons or not), it's best to keep away from flashing images. You can block Flash in your browser but there is no way to block animated gifs like this unless you block all images.

Angus might allow the more conservative animated avatars, but we don't want any fast-changing or obtrusive ones here. Some may have slipped through, and they need changing/removing. This isn't a cartoon forum.
