A "pop quiz on health" was conducted over the loudspeaker at my son's school yesterday, and they posed the question:

"Which is worse: smoking or vaping?"

The correct answer they gave was "vaping". I have had many conversations with my son about this including showing him the recent video from PHE, so he knows the truth. But I think it's a bit of shock to him that he is getting such contradictory information from the authority figures in his life.

It irritates me beyond words that these lies are being so loudly and broadly distributed not only to the general public, but also directly to our kids! End rant.

Kids are smart. Eventually they come to understand that some of those "authority figures" have been lying to them. Then they start to question authority. That's probably a good thing. :)

I hope that you are correct but I am in despair.

do they teach reading writing and arithmetic or just indulge in social engineering.

I would complain loudly and publicly that they teach that tobacco is safer. Is their a chance they are on BT payroll? or are they backward?
Apparently they do both.

It is a very good public school, and this is just a case of "useful idiots" spouting out the negative propaganda from the FDA/CDC/ALA/AHA/CTFK/countless sources of false information, etc.

dcdozer, these type of folks say drugs are bad and you shouldn't do them, and tobacco is a gateway drug which leads to harder drug use. And the ones that doctors give you are perfectly safe.

But when they go home they open a beer or a bottle of wine to unwind. But isn't Alcohol a gateway drug?

I would write a stern letter insisting on proof of that claim.

But I agree, kids are smart, and this is a good opportunity to teach critical thinking.

When my granddaughter was small and her parents were battling for custody, she heard a lot of lies and saw a lot of ugly things. I told her, “Just because people are grown up doesn’t mean they don’t lie, and it doesn’t mean they’ll always do the right thing.”

I'm old, so excuse my stupidity .. are quizzes normally administered over a loudspeaker these days in Public School .. ?? Also, how are the questions answered .. ?? On a blank paper .. ?? In addition, are they graded and part of the students grade record .. ?? Were students given this as an assignment and then quizzed .. ?? Is Vaping and Smoking part of the teaching curriculum .. ??

I see the push in your school system as a desperate attempt to stop teens from trying vaping instead of smoking. Smoking is not as cool as it used to be to the younguns, but vaping is still an adult thing they can break some rules and be cool to their peers without the huge negatives that go along with smoking. I agree it is BS and they are using lies and propaganda, and teens may be dissuaded from vaping but may still learn to smoke...

What did the School Board / School Superintendent say when you contacted them about this?

Agree, wholeheartedly. I'd have contacted them immediately, to find who was behind it, and how they came to that conclusion, and how it came to be in the teaching materials. Then, I'd have requested more curriculum to look over and see what else they were teaching.

I do remember the kids coming home around the age of 10 and berating us about smoking. It happened to all the parents at the same time so we knew what was happening. That was a little different I guess because smoking really was bad and we were already feeling guilty about it. I doubt the kids see the vaping propaganda as anything more than bull.... though.

The worst part is they are fed so much bull that they won't believe anything they hear from a grownup.

Yeah... The First thing I would do is e-Mail the School's Principle to request an Unabridged Transcript of the "Announcement". As well as the who authorized doing this announcement.

And insure that my request was processed promptly, I would "CC" the email to...

james.lane@doe.virginia.gov (Dr. James Lane - Superintendent of Public Instruction)

as well as...

Patricia.Haymes@doe.virginia.gov (Patricia Haymes - Director Office of Dispute Resolution)

They're just trying to thwart kids from starting to vape. They are not saying tobacco is safe. Sheesh.
The correct answer is don't start either one.

Good on you talking to your kid about it DC. Regular un-indoctrination sessions with your kids is necessary as they are being taught nonsense these days.

Heck, even my leftist school teacher sister says they've gone too far.

But they’re flat out lying to kids to do it. This rarely turns out well.

My nephew - now aged 12, was my biggest 'you need to stop smoking as it's bad for you' complainant. He had been taught at school all the negatives about smoking and happily spouted them all back at me ;)

I sincerely hope since we live in new zealand, that he doesn't get his head filled with the same misinformation your son had to listen to.
