Sherman man's e-cigarette explodes while charging

There is a definite pattern developing with these incidents. It's always either a USB port or car charger adapter being used.

Predictably, this story doesn't provide any details on the age of the device or whether it may have been damaged before attempting the charge. And, two hours is a LONG time for a 650mAh battery to be connected.

Why the hell did he pick it up after it shot across the room? Hmm a burnt smoking battery.. I'll play with it!
I wish there were warning labels on people's foreheads.. it would save so much time.

I wish they would stop using warning labels, it would cut down the amount of stupid people in the world.....
I'm kidding........maybe?

Playing right into the lawyers hands, however....

The media's 'crisis generation' mode is apparent on this issue. We can count on it getting worse. Who will protect us from these deadly batteries??

Let's all do our part to talk battery safety guys. It's important!

Haven't read the article yet, however I suspect we will eventually find poor charger manufacturing at the root of the problem. Chargers with poor circuit protection, not reducing charge rate near end of charge, etc.

As for 650mah battery - 2 Hours is in no way to long to be on a charge. A proper charging system will slow charge a battery to minimize heat build up and avoid life shortening damage.

I own dozens of Li-ion Batteries ranging from 90mah single sells to Complex 5000mah batteries and have a Balance charger to properly maintain them. There is more to charging than most people realize. It involves much more than just pushing current back into a depleted battery.

It is shocking how folks will drop $75,100,200 without hesitation on a mod, but then buy the crappiest cheapest charger and batteries they can find.

YMMV, but I have four 650's and not one of them takes more than an hour on a UL listed charger to reach green.

I always buy the recommended charger for the battery. Also the recommended battery for the device I'm using them on. It is not worth the $$$ over an accident.

Not saying they cannot be charged fast. That is why they sell RAPID chargers. Never the less proper charging for sustained battery life is best done by SLOW charging and or conditioning.
I can put a flight pack back in service at the field in about 15 minutes with my Rapid charger.
Same battery pack gets about a 4hr charge at home.

200mah charger would be better for a 650 than the 420mah chargers that sell with them, but people are always in a hurry.

The other battery in the picture-the one that didn't go boom, looks like its been well cared for :p

Good catch!

"Hmm... let's take this beaten up old eGo battery stick and see if it'll take a charge. Plug it right into this here MacBook USB port and..."

The guy is definitely an idiot. He said he wont use another ecig again. Doesn't he realize that he will live a lot longer with burns on his hands rather than cancer in his lungs.

People don't like to take credit for their own stupidity. They would rather blame the device when used improperly. If there IS fault with the device, then by all means blame the device.

Some people will use any excuse to continue an addiction in the way they are most comfortable.
