OK, I've searched all over the board looking for answers and have not found anyone with the same issue as mine.

Currently using Kanger subtank mini on a kbox mini. I went to making my own juice to see if I could find the right combination of Pg/Vg nic level ect. All juices are made from Liquidbarns starter kit.

So my issue is everytime I start to vape, I cough. Almost instantly. Second vape, cough again. Wash, rinse, repeat. However, by the time I get to the 8th or 9th vape, it settles down and smooths out. Then I can chain vape with no issues at all. Usually run the box anywhere between 25-30watts on the rba deck at .5ohms. Mouth to lung, direct lung, tight draw, vent wide open, blow out before hit.... Doesn't matter. High nic, low nic, doesn't matter. I've even been making straight 100% VG juices, with VG flavoring. Only time the juice has any PG in it, is if the flavoring is PG based. So max any of my juices have would be 8% PG. Cough can happen instantly when I start to draw, or the moment I start to exhale. Change the wick, make a new coil. Still the same.

Also to note, it happens to me also on the 1.5 ohm OCC coil at 10-15 watts. I've also tried other peoples equipment with the same problems.

Getting frustrating because at work, I only get a short time to get my nic fix. When you can't get past the coughing in that little amount of time, can't get the nic fix. So been dual using and I really want to drop the analogs. I watch the wife hit hers whenever she likes with no issues.

Love some suggestions.

I've tried vaping on and off for many years since its infancy. I could never get the fix I needed from them and always went back to the analogs. Had the coughing issue then too. The devices back then were weak and horrible. Then dad passed away two years ago from lung cancer. Hopped on the chantex. That worked. However after about 3-4 months, I really missed that smoking action. It was my pacifier. So back to analogs again. Now, If I am not at work, with the kanger tank, I can vape all day at home and not touch a single analog. Also I am drinking lots of water vs other sugary beverages. Its just at work, I can't chain vape. Set it down, work an hour. Go pick it up, hack up a lung.

Maybe I try to whip up a batch of 0mg nic just to rule that out. I've tried some 70pg/30vg juices cause that was the only premade grape I could find that I liked the taste. Same thing with the cough. Just after a couple of days on that high PG and my throat was destroyed.

Just want to get this licked. As i know with the box mod, I can get the nic fix I need to stay away from the analogs.

Hello and welcome, Terry. :) Good to see you here. Perhaps a longer, narrower bore drip tip might help. Also, since the nic is absorded in the soft mucosa of your mouth and nose, I find no need to inhale into my lungs. Quite a few here do the same thing. Hoping you find an answer.....Maybe a teaspoon of honey or a piece of hard candy to coat your throat before you vape? :)

blow out before hit.... Doesn't matter.

That would have been my suggestion. Or start inhaling before you press the fire button. I know if I'm pre-firing a coil, and I happen to inhale by accident, it burns, especially on my RDAs.

I would try 0mg too... I have a coworker that tried vaping and couldn't vape anything but 0mg, but she smokes though. Hopefully this isn't your case.

Did you also have a problem inhaling cigarette smoke first thing in the morning? Even a little bit? Because it might not be your equipment or your juice or your nic level or any of that. It could simply be lung damage or sensitivity. I had a terrible time when I first started vaping, I had to take teeny hits when I'd start vaping for the day or after a break of an hour or more, and I coughed every time, too. That was a little over 6 months ago, but now my lungs have healed somewhat (or at least "de-gunked!"), and I no longer cough unless I get some spitback from a dirty coil or I don't let up on the fire button in time. ;) If you've ruled out equipment, nic level, PG/VG ratios, and such, then maybe it just needs tincture of time.

I use high VG liquid, too, because it feels less harsh to me than higher PG levels, and I mix my own stuff now, too. I still use PG based flavors, but the rest is all VG and it's much smoother to me. I do find that zero nic juice is smoother than any level of nic that I use. Normally, I use 3 or 4 mg nic but lately even THAT has been making me feel hyper, so I'm using zero nic now for most of the day and just take nic-breaks when I feel I need them. But even a 3mg juice seems harsher than a zero nic juice, at least to me.

Anyway, those are just some of my random thoughts. :)

Us vapors have to use the smoking area at work so - I don't vape at work I use nicotine lossenges.

It gets me through the day and I don't end up getting 2nd hand smoke on me and my clothes.

I had the caughing thing when I first stated vaping. In my case it was the PG+nicotine level. If I reduced one or the other I was fine. While experimenting I went with purely unflavored as I did not want the flavors to cloud my experiments. I actually do mostly unflavored to this day. :)

I've been having a similar problem recently. It started after I had a cold a few weeks back. When I start vaping I get a dry hacking cough, not every time but a lot of the time. There's some area in the back of my mouth that is sensitive. After I vape for a while it goes away and I can vape as long as I like. It's just after not vaping for a while it happens, same as with yourself. I know my sinuses are still clogged up and dripping into my throat. Around the same time I started using different flavorings to make juice. Occasionally I get a coughing attack if I eat dry food like crackers. Could be anything. I used to get persistent coughs like that after a cold back when I was smoking. Until this time it hadn't happened since I gave up the cigs.

I did notice that when I change a coil it gets easier. Also changed over to some old juice and it got easier. Lowered the watts down to 8 and it got a lot easier. There could be a lot of reasons but right now I think I just got a raw throat from the cold and the sinuses. Then the coughing is going to irritate the throat tissue even more and not allow it to heal. Right now I'm staying with the old juice, keeping the power way down, limiting my vaping, and not inhaling into my lungs, doing those things I'm not coughing much at all. Give the throat a rest. Maybe some of those tricks would help you.

    good luck

You seem to have all kinds of issues.

#1 you are not sticking with anything - dabbling

Dual use can be a Pain in the bottom, especially if your doing a lot of smoking.
Mixing your own? At what Flavor percentage?
Max VG, okay - you are still smoking and working with diminished lung capacity.

You may notice each progressive draw, cough, draw and you are drawing deeper until suddenly the cough stops.
I smoked for over 45 years and still get this in the morning on occasion. Once the lungs are working all is good.

Messing with power settings can cause issues.
To low and things get syrupy.
To high and they get hot, causing a cough reaction.

When all else fails - go back to what Did work and gradually work forward.
