So here is the thing, I quit smoking about 6 years ago with vaping. When I started I had zero issues with coughing and it went great. Then a few years ago while in a very stressful medical situation when my wife was in the hospital, I slipped back into smoking.

I want to quit smoking again, but every time I vape now I cough like crazy. I've tried old favorite liquids and even some new nic salt ones. Stuff I used to vape all day now makes me cough in one puff and I don't know why.

Has anyone else experienced this? And how did you get over it? I've tried liquids with higher VG and PG and that seems to make no difference. So weird to me that my first go around had zero issues and now everything seems to irritate my throat.

Hi. Do you use DTL or MTL. I cough with MTL but not DTL. Don't know why but Mouth To Lung makes me cough my head off. Yet with cigs I smoked MTL.
If you are using MTL maybe try DTL.

Hi and welcome back,
Are you still smoking and vaping?
What is the nicotine level of the juice you are using?
What device(s) are you currently using?
What devices did you use to quit the first time?

Vapor is more dense than smoke. You will feel it when you inhale. It will be thick and may cause you to choke, cough or gag.
The good news is that our favorite drug is absorbed in the mouth, nose and throat just fine. It is not necessary to inhale to get a nic fix.

Cheers
I

I started with those small 808 batteries like many. My favorite is my itaste 134, but I thought that was a little much coming back so I picked up a Aspire Breeze 2. It seems comparable to the old 808 and 510's vapor wise maybe a bit more. MTL makes it a little easier, but not a lot.

Using 36mg liquid... It's the only variable that I have not changed up. Does a higher nic produce a harsher vape?

Higher levels of PG (found in high nicotine pod liquids) usually makes me cough. Anything in freebase 6mg or higher, or more than ~35% PG, can make me cough. This is partially why I don't usually MTL vape.

Not saying it’s due to that, since you’ve obviously vaped similar to what you’re trying now. I’m just saying there’s an optimal range of nicotine strength and ratio for each person and you need to sample to find it. Could also be your device is more powerful than what you tried before. On the rare occasion I do MTL it’s at (comparably) low voltage.

36mg/ml may be the problem.
The breeze 2 is at least twice as efficient as the 808/510 atties you had been using.

I would suggest trying 18mg/ml-24mg/ml to reduce the harshness.
If you have the option to use salt based juice, it may also help with reducing some of the discomfort in your throat.
Salt nicotine is PH adjusted to be less harsh. Salts and Freebase nicotine can be mixed to achieve the nicotine strength and throat hit that is most comfortable for you.

Hi, i just had this problem after taking up smoking again. I had vaped before but went back to smoking but this recent time when i went back to baping it wss brutal. I coughed up so much junk out of my lungs then i was fine. There was a very bad tickle when i vaped. Its gone now. I think it was just from all the damage the cigarette had done and my body clearing itself out. It took about 3 days and i was fine.

I agree with what @Izan has suggested. A little lower on the nicotine level and perhaps making the switch to salts.. look for 25mg salts might be better for you all the way around.

That said, I coughed when I switched to vaping, and to some degree my husband did as well although not near the level I did, but I had lung and throat issues he never had.

So, a small amount of this might be a worsening lung function as well since you last vaped. When we switch to vaping our lungs begin to heal, and for some of us this entails coughing..

I thought I vaped high nic at 24mg...36 is a bit high, so I think 24 would work fine...when I started vaping I coughed a lot, right from the start, using mtl tanks at 24mg and what helped was the draw...I took a regular puff and held it in my mouth for like 3 seconds before inhaling into lungs...this made it alot better and only coughed half as much...I still coughed a little but it was bearable. After a week it got even better and at 2 weeks no more coughing...

While all of the above is solid advice, you are a long term smoker. If the cough persists for a few weeks please see your doctor to make sure the cough isn't just vape related or something that your vaping is irritating. All of us smokers need to be careful in attributing lung issues immediately to our vaping and not something related to our decades of smoking.

I used nic salts in the beginning but I used them in MTL devices, at puny wattages, like 7--12 watts and 1.8--0.7 ish coils.

I wound up being PG sensitive (that was not making me cough, though) and a few other things that I had to figure out. However, even with nic salts, the nic may be too high in that setup. IIRC even the "MTL" pod (I think it's a pod) is rather robust.

You will need to lower your nic, and/or try a different device. If you like the Breeze you can easily bring down your nic percentage by buying some VG. As long as it's USP grade. But Walmart sells it. You would have the advantage of trying different nic levels, and also the advantage of finding out if your PG ratio is too high. After that, you can go from there.

I will say some coughing in the beginning is normal. I did cough, a fair bit at first. However I was coming off a 3 ppd habit, and 18 months of straight pneumonia I would have been shocked if I did NOT cough.

I coughed a LOT more though, starting out with a super sub0hm tank with a 12 mg/ml nic level. That was DEFINITELY the nic. In fact that was my first post on ECF "I don't remember coughing this much when I dual used before?" I think I suggested to myself maybe upping my nic but fortunately the wonderful experts got to me in time...:thumbs:
