It could also be the charger you are using. Some external chargers have really tight springs. That you can help by easing the spring into place with your fingers if that is the cause of it.

I agree. The sliding contacts of a charger can move rapidly when released under spring tension. A small dent would be the result. The outer casing of an 18650 is ferrous metal that sticks to a magnet, so it's pretty tough. Go easy on the charger slides and gently move them into place.
