Ok guys, im really trying to decide on a good mech mod to get, and I stumbled across one that is a lot different. The hot vapes bombshell that runs off a 26650 imr 3500 mah battery. In terms of mech mods, wouldn't this be the god of mech mods? Also another question, I see a lot of mods that are capable of 5 or 6 volts. At 6 volts, wouldn't you need to run around a 4.5 ohm atomizer to be able to vape that without burning the crap out of your juice, or coil? And another question, about the whole sub ohm thing, if you wrap say a .5 coil, even at 3 volts, wouldn't that burn the crap out of your juice, or does it just wick so fast with the SS mesh that you get a wonderful and much stronger flavor? Sorry for the noobie questions here, I'm just trying to get a grasp on all this :)

- how do you reckon the bombshell is the god of mechs? It is about much more than just a big battery, you know.
- many RBAs run ss mech wicks that soak up a lot of heat so 6 volts is not too high. But what you said is a reason too; good wicks can keep up.
- no. Lets say you have 0.5 ohm dual coils. At 4 volts thats 32W (given amp limit allows it). That is split up between 2 coils so its 16W each, not too high.

Also, high wattage does not matter. Yes, you heard it right. Sub-ohm is overrated. What matters is the amount and the characteristics of heat input, as in, how much heat is put into your juice, and in what way (how fast, how wide etc.)

Yes I suppose sub ohm could be considered useless, but the only way to get the same results would be to push a lot more power into a 2.0 coil. So a .4 coil at 3.7 volts, would be like running a 2.0 at 5.3 volts? Am I right there or wrong?

And yeah what I meant about it being godly was the bigger battery so it lasted way longer.

Also I've noticed in my VV mod, that when I run a 2.5 ohm at 4.1 volts, it sucks my battery a lot faster than a 1.8 at 3.3.

Honestly, I would try for an entry level mech like the Sigelei #8 or similar to see if you like it.

It's been my experience that the key to a good RBA experience is the wick and coil and on a mechanical mod that means going with a larger gauge coil in order to get as many wraps as possible for a coil between 1 and 1.5 ohms.

With my first mechanical I made five or six coils using various combinations of 32 awg Kanthal and 3mm silica and SS mesh and didn't get a good vape out of any of them. 32 awg Kanthal just isn't going to give you enough surface area to vaporize enough juice.

My point is...it's less the mod and more what you use on it. Get a cheap mechanical and experiment with some coils to decide if you want to dive in further.

Yeah it'd be best to get a cheapo first, I'm just trying to find one that wont have a bunch of problems from the start. In reality what I will probably end up doing is getting a cheapo mech mod just for the purpose of making coils, then once the coil is good, stick it on my VV mod so I can dial it in the way I want to vape. I have an eVic, not as powerful as some, so i'm gonna have to shoot for a 1.8ish coil to be able to vape properly with an RBA. I don't think an eVic will go below 1.4, or maybe its 1.2, but either way, no way I could make SS mesh coils with it. I don't want to torch the piss out of them to make them work.

And a standard multimeter will work for both checking the ohms of the coil, and checking the charge on a battery right? Yeah I'm really noobie, but doing my best to become informed. Ever since I started vaping it has become a hobby for me, and the idea of tinkering with an RBA and making your own wicks and coils just sounds like a lot of fun to me :)

I made my 2nd coil yesterday using 28ga kanthal. 5 wraps came in at 1.1Ω. It is really bringing out the flavor of the juice for me. This is a RSST (mesh wick) sitting on an EA mod. My 1st coil was around 2.2 using 32ga and not nearly as good a taste. Juice is Black and Black from S&S Mods. I am now totally understanding why people use low ohm coils.

As an addendum to my last post: I've been experimenting with microcoils (http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...5-coil-resistance-surface-liquid-contact.html) and just made a 1.0 ohm coil with five wraps using 32 awg Kanthal and it is vaping very, very nice on my #8. So belay that last...it is possible to get a good vape on a mechanical using 32 awg Kanthal. I think I'll give it a whirl with some Nichrome next...

I'm also looking to get into mechanicals, primarily for use with Genesis style RBAs. I love my ProVaris, but I want a back-up in case they ever need to be serviced. Another attraction is the reliability. I already own a Silver Bullet, but it's not a true mech as it has an electronic switch. It's a pretty solid device and has a lot of charm, but the 510 connection drives me nuts - that floating center post is its Achille's heel.

From what I've read so far, the Sigelei's are a bit hit and miss in terms of both build quality and user serviceability - and what would you expect for the price? For that reason, I'm looking at a PureSmoker Legacy. It's around the same price as the SB, but you get a true mechanical mod which is fully user serviceable and has an adjustable center post. Yes - it's twice as much as a Sigelei (even more if you pick up the optional Flat Top Adapter, but I'm pretty sure I'll get twice the satisfaction out of it.

And a standard multimeter will work for both checking the ohms of the coil, and checking the charge on a battery right?

A standard multimeter will work just fine - as long as by "standard" you mean digital. The older analog multimeters are notoriously inaccurate. An auto-ranging feature is nice, but it's not essential and you'll pay more.

Ohms are ohms.
Volts are....device dependant.

A mech mod has no built-in protection (some like that fact, others don't).
A mech mod has no voltage regulator (Boooo!) it follows battery voltage which changes as the cell is depleted.
An APV (mod with circuitry) is often amp limited. That's OK because you don't need crazy amps unless you do crazy stuff, IMHO.

You can build the coil to whatever ohms works for your device, mech or APV.
Both can make clouds.
Both draw amps from the battery. The more amps, the faster the battery drains.

I like the protected regulated stuff more than the unregulated stuff. But that's me.

Battery life is device dependent too. Some are more efficient than others.

Also, just because you can wind a coil at 1.0 ohms or whatever on a VV mod with 28 ga wire....doesn't mean that's the best idea. 28 ga is too thick ...it needs a lot of watts just to heat the wire up to be effective. It's better to use 30 ga or 32 ga and maybe around 1.8 to 2.0 ohms and use the regulated VV, IMHO. Then there's the whole "micro coil" thing that's effective on APV's too.

Of course, you can also do that with a mech. Use thinner wire to avoid having to have the excessive watts.

I know, I know. People swear by 28 ga. But at a certain point, heavy ga becomes self-defeating. There's other options. Mech or not. And they vape well. And with VV, you can up the volts.

I use a 2x 14500 box mod that lasts a day and a half and vapes up a storm if I want it to. So meh.
