This is probably the 15,329th time you've all read a post like this so I apologize in advance. I'm new here and have read thousands of posts and I'm still hesitant to take the plunge because I'm unsure which type of ecig is right for me. I was hoping you'd offer some insight and opinions as I'm a bit overwhelmed with so much information and abbreviations:)

I'm a heavy smoker, a pack a day (Marlboro Lights) for 27 years, and need to quit ASAP. .I've read countless posts about starter models and would rather start with a model where I wouldn't need to upgrade. I'm also interested in something that isn't too expensive to maintain. Also, I'm kinda mechanically challenged..

I don't care whether or not it looks like a cigarette. I'd smoke a broomstick if it helps me kick this nasty habit. So, any advice is appreciated..

Hi Staceys and welcome to ECF. I was also in the same boat- smoked ! PAD strong analogs 40+ yrs. I decided to go with a Megalodon becasue:
Quality
all mechanical and less prone to breakdown
gives a great vape
It really depends on how much you're willing to spend and most new vapers upgrade within a very short time. I would recommend starting with cartomizers as a delivery system as they are user friendly. Here's a dictionary of ecig terms
E-Cig Glossary. Definitions, abbreviations, and meanings. | eCigology
PVs range in price from $20- $300.
Good Luck, Vapoor.

when I started I want to make sure it worked and was confused with all the products so I bought a xl 510 kit because I watch some videos, a ego type kit and a E9, the ego type e-cig is the one that got me to quit the other 2 I gave away with in a week of using the ego I knew it was working and I like it, I bought a inexpensive 5v box mod, the point of my long story is a its a journey a KGO kits and parts might be a good place to start or a E-Power From Smok Tech and HECS.

Welcome, good afternoon and Happy Holidays!

I don't care whether or not it looks like a cigarette. I'd smoke a broomstick if it helps me kick this nasty habit. So, any advice is appreciated..

This is actually very encouraging! Most have a preconceived notion that "it must look like a cigarette" There is nothing wrong with that but it is so limiting.

So, you'll need a battery. Look around the site for Riva and e-power. I have tried the Riva battery and liked it. I have used the e-power batteries and know what they are capable of. Relatively inexpensive and effective.

Next you will need some cartomizers. You will probably receive some if you buy a starter kit. Down the road you will probably fine tune to your taste. Many love the Boge 2.0. You may also wish to look into tanks. A tank thread just to get you started:
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...49915-info-about-tank-systems-whats-best.html

For liquid, there are countless options. Just one thread to get you started:
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-forum/238053-sample-packs-where-get-em.html

There is always the SEARCH ECF WITH GOOGLE box close to the very top and a bit to the right. Searching is your friend!

That's about it! Again welcome and all the best!

Smoked a PAD for over 15 years. Bought an eGo and have been smoke free since Nov 18. After a bit of learning in the last month, My best reccomendation is get a couple eGo 1000mAh batts, charger, and some cartos. Personal preference is Kanger LR botton coils. Love the TH, flavour, and vapor! Add a couple differend styles or drip tips (To figure out what is most comfortable) and you should have a great time. Best of luck and welcome to ECF! :vapor:

StaceyS, welcome, all good advice above! Most people recommend starting with an eGo, Kgo, e-power, Riva, something like that. Much better starting point than something that is small and needs to be charged every hour. After that, a lot of people move to mods, which come in such a ginormous variety that it kind of opens up a whole new world. I think its kind of nice to start off with one of the ego type kits because then you will get a real feel for what you want. I would get one of the batteries that is about 1000 mah. This should last you most of a day. Also get a manual battery that you have to press the button to take a hit. These units are sealed so if you leak juice it wont kill the battery as easily as with an automatic (where you just suck and there is no button). Also you should look for probably a 510 connection (i think all the above have this). It is a very very common connection and will let you purchase cartomizers and atomizers easily.

It is kind of an investment at first (and sometimes continually lol). You have to find a battery you like, then you have to find a cartomizer or atomizer you really like, and a juice. But it is worth it!

Oh and about cartos and atties, low resistance ones on those ego batteries work great. Like Resurrectors are good, I also like clearomizers that dont have filling but have a wick instead.

Good luck!

All great advice above, but If you want out of the box from the jump get Reo Grand box mod and Boge or Ressurrector cartos from CCV you will save a ton of money in the long run and have a great start to vaping, wish I did this it took me 6 months and lots of money to find my way. Whatever you choose is okay IF it keeps you off cigs. Good Luck.

When choosing a PV here's some battery info- it's all approximate but it will illustrate how often you'll have to recharge batts:
Battery Info:
100 mah= 1 hour vaping on single coil cartomizers
100 mah= 1/2 hour on dual coil cartomizers
Good Luck, Vapoor.

Edit: also understand with the cheaper batts, at 50% discharge, performance drops off a cliff and it's recommended to recharge them when they're at 75% discharge- they'll last longer.

Staceys it all depends on how much money you want to put out to start with. My husband andI have been cig free for one month today! We have had 3 different PV's that have all worked fine.

We started with 3 ego clones 650 ohm which my brother had given us (he and his girl friend had upgraded)

About a week in we decided to upgrade to bigger batteries so we got our first starter kits for just under $30 a piece for an ego clone passthru (meaning you can charge and vape at the same time) at 1100 ohm. That device works great! And for the price which came with a case a charger 5 cartos and a sample bottle of juice, it couldn't be beat. If you're interest you can find that kit at vipvapors .com

Being that my beother had upgraded to provari's we had tried those when he came and let me tell you....wow! That has been our actual goal, however being on a tight budget we just don't have the $400+ to get us both one with everything we would need.
However with the money we were saving at 3 weeks we decided it was time to upgrade again, okay so we probably spent a little more then we have saved thus far, but still it will be worth it. We ordered the lava tube, very much like a provari just not as nicely made. We received those on friday and have been very happy! I ordered 2 lava tubes a charger and 2 cases and due to some battery issues I had to order them somewhere else but I got 4 batteries (so we could each have one in our pv and one charging) for everything I spent just under $200. I got coupon codes from here and saved about $25. Pretty much any decent e-cig place has a coupon code list in that part of the ecf forum.

As far as juices well that is all subject to taste. We stay completely away from any tabacco flavored, as we don't want anything that may make a cig taste good. I smoked a pack a day maybe a little more of Marlboro Ultra lights and my nubby was at almost 2 packs a day of Marlboro lights. We use a nic strength anywhere between 12mg to 18mg which has been just great at dealing with any cravings. Most places will allow you to pick your pg/vg level also which I usually go with a 70/30 it gives a good throat hit, produces decent vapor, and the fruity flavors are awesome. Get sample sizes of lots of flavors from different vendors before ordering big bottles!! And if you dont like them at first let them sit a week or 2 shake them and try again (the flavors change while sitting or steeping as they call it)

A personal rule I made for myself when I started was if I felt like "cheating" I would have to vape for at least one minute. If I still felt like smoking, then fine the cigs were right there. But as of today I have never still wanted one :)

Anyway that was just my story......Good luck to you!

I echo the above posts and recommend an e-cigarette that will produce a lot of vapor if you want it and won't break the bank as a first purchase.

The E-Power 14650 has a lot of advantages. Initial investment won't kill you. Stands up to heavy daily use. Uses standard Li-ion 14650 rechargeable batteries, not expensive custom batteries. Fits in a jeans pocket. With the right cartomizer a typical pack and a half a day smoker needs to fill or change out filled cartos once or twice a day. The batteries last me more than a day between charges, not hours. Parts are available and inexpensive.

E-Power starter kits are sold by a number of vendors. These kits are sold in similar looking boxes but offer different equipment with the E-Power 14650. I recommend the starter kit from Hoosier e-cig supply. It comes with 2.0 ohm LR XL cartomizers, battery charger and two rechargeable 14650 batteries. All you need is a e-liquid and you are ready to go.

Brent at Hoosier offers great customer service and ships fast. I usually get my shipment from Hoosier three days after ordering online.

As you've seen in this thread, there are varying opinions. My best advice (and it's good) is to start with a Riva/eGo kit. Go with it. You'll immediately find it is a viable alternative. There will undoubtedly be something that's just not up to your liking (slight chance that it WILL completely fill your needs, tho!). This is the learning curve that you'll be faced with. We all went through it. ECF is here to help you when you get to that point. Welcome!

Do yourself a favor and order a pack of LR (low resistance) cartos with your kit, so you'll have some diversity in your apparatus and won't be stuck with JUST atomizers. Figure on buying some menthol liquid. I know I smoked Pall Mall reds for yeeeears. Menthol helped me get something more that I needed when beginning vaping.

You've had alot to read thus far in this thread. Order! Get back to us with descriptive reactions to whatevr you choose. Good luck, Stacys!

Welcome Staceys! I'm not going to add to your hardware confusion but I will try to offer some other advice that can be overlooked in the mad rush.

Vaping is NOT smoking. While it can simulate many of the satisfying actions of smoking to include the nicotine delivery, it is a very different animal even to the point of the inhale. Whatever you decide to buy, give it time. Learn the techniques of vaping and what you like and dislike about it. Ask questions about what you have bought and how to use it.

Be aware that once you put down the "stinkys" and pick up the PV that your body will react fairly quickly. Again, ask questions. Most everyone here has gone through this and can give you answers about what you are experiencing. There'll be a lot going on inside your body once you make the switch.

Good luck to you! :)

Start out with an EGO-type battery/ I would say 900mah or 1000mah. Then get yourself a couple Boge cartomizers between 1.5 to 2.0 ohms. Ohms is the resistance. This is the kit that made e-smoking enjoyable instead of a compromise. Being a Marlboro smoker I would try 2 e-juices. V2's red cartridge it's their Marlboro: V2 Cigs Electronic Cigarettes :: America's Best Brand of E-Cigarette you could also opt for their starter kit; but the batteries are only good for about 2 months and are expensive.

Also Alien Visions E-Juice has a flavor most people love; Boba's Bounty. I would get your e-juice in 18mg/ml strength as it's close to normal cig strength. You won't notice any difference if you start there.

So to sum it up; start with a reliable battery then go from there. A good idea would be a 1000mah EGO passthrough with included USB charger(you charge the e-cig via a USB port on your computer, and can smoke while it's charging. This battery should run you no more than $25. Then purchase a few cartridges with or without juice in them (18mg) strenght. The price for an empty cartridge should be comparable to a juiced cartridge ($2 per cartridge is standard). So for $40-$50 or so you can get 5x cartridges of Marlboro, and 5 cartridges of blank from V2 Cigs Electronic Cigarettes :: America's Best Brand of E-Cigarette 6ml of Boba's Bounty from Alien Visions E-Juice, and a 1000mah or 650mah passthrough EGO-T battery, the 650mah can be found for $21 from Myvaporstore.com | The Electronic Cigarette Super Store and should be adequate for a pack a day.

There ya have it good luck and get rid of those nasty expensive analogs!

Just understand that over time your taste will change, and what will satisfy you 6 months from now will likely knock you on your can right now.
So I would advise against buying the biggest baddest device on the planet to start out with. Wait until you know what you like so that you make "informed" (your information) choices.
Don't worry to much about the cost of a nice little starter kit, it will serve the needs of friends & family long after you have moved on to bigger and better things.

Much good advice. I will chime in and second the E-Power 510. My second and third choices would be the Kgo and Riva 510. These are all "ego" type models but better IMO than the ego because the batteries are better. They are all the size of a slim cigar or sharpie pen. The E-Power is nice because the battery is rated at 1050 mAh and is 3.7 volts instead of the ego's smaller 3.4 volts. Plus the batteries cost around $4 each and last 4 times longer than the ego batteries which cost between $13 - $20 each. Big savings in battery cost.

Most people have at least two models, if only so you have a back-up. Being a strong smoker, as I was, you may want to make your second purchase a good 5 volt or variable volt model which provides warmer vapor and more consistency. The GLV2 and Darwin are good examples. Here are a few web sites that are well supported that sell the E-Power:

    e-Power

    Crystal Clear Vaping

I would also recommend getting some blank cartomizers and get eliquid in the 24mg nicotine strength range. You can always make it weaker, but you cannot make it stronger. Most need this level of nicotine strength to make the transition.

    Good Luck

    Welcome to ECF Staceys
I started with a Joye Mega Ego Kit. (LINK) It has and does serve me well. This kit comes with (2) complete ecigs. Add some 2.0 ohm cartomizers (LINK) and some juice (LINK) I would suggest 24mg nicotine and you are good to go. You can add pretty much anything you want to this kit as you progress in your vaping journey as it is 510 threaded. I hope this helps and is intended only as a suggestion. :)

Don't worry about asking questions here, the information can truly be overwhelming. We all asked lots of questions!! If you don't want to have to upgrade later, why not start with a Provari? It's the best, or at least one of the very best.

If you want juice that tastes like a Marlboro, I think Dekang 555 fits the bill. For a milder tobaccoish flavor, I like Dekang Tab, and RY4.
