Anyone ever see a battery top like this? Ideas for the cause?

If you know what this cell is, please don't say anything. Thanks. :)

Awww, man. I'm dying to know.

Whoever put this out on the market obviously has terrible quality control.

Haha, I think the old Millwrights were on a different page in a whole different book from us farmers. Them guys were/are true craftsmen!
And howdy neighbor, the pic in my avatar was taken a month ago on route 37 near Rexford,Mt coming back from Eureka. Hope this weather is helping the smoke clear up there, I see the log trucks are back out in full force!
Those batteries look worse the closer they get. They look well ventilated.

    Eureka?!?
LOL...I spent nine Summers out there with relatives as a teenager. They lived in Rexford and moved to the family ranch outside Eureka. Loved it there!

This is a new cell from its original undamaged box and what you see is identical on three cells of the same type. I have some thoughts about what caused that outer ring roughness but would love to hear what you think does this. I've never seen this before.

I'm much more knowledgeable about plastic molding than steel forming, but I'll give it a go anyway.

The 'can' or casing of a battery is made by what I believe is called a deep draw die operation. After that operation what you have is a casing that is cylindrical all the way to the positive end. The battery internal parts are then inserted and the top of the casing is rolled (or whatever they call that operation) to make the finished cell that looks something like figure 1 here. I know that this type of rolling op is tricky and if things go just a little wrong you can get wrinkling where the metal is rolled or worse.

IMO these batteries exhibit exactly that type of wrinkling/distortion issue. They should have been caught by the factory but .... happens and sometimes things get through.
