Recently I've seen 3D printed wood, basically sawdust in the plastic mix, but it doesn't look that convincing. You could print wood jpeg's on paper and glue it on and slap on some varnish. l3oertjie did a quite convincing cigar with printed tobacco leaf.

I plan on using Laywood myself, otherwise you would probably have to be pretty handy with a airbrush.

That looks pretty interesting. I have a good airbrush, but I'm not the post artistic person with it or in general :D. But I have seen some pretty awesome results with some brush techniques. They always make it look so dang easy, but I know better. One of these days I'm going to try a couple things on some scrap, but I'm not holding my breath.

I visited a manufacturer, who used pre-printed plastic sleeves that were shrunk-wrapped onto long pipes. I just did a bit of Internet searching to see if something was available for the consumer. One source said to search for Wood Grain Vinyl Film.

I came across this site that sells car customization kits. This included wood grain adhesive vinyl covers for your dash. Prices start at $15. I have never seen or used their product.

if you want real wood you could use veneer we would use it in the cabinet shop for edges of plywood and things but they sell it by the roll you could cut out sizes you need to use spray adhesive and put it on but be careful sanding! Shop Wood Veneer & Edging at Lowes.com
