anyone experiment with different materials in the carts?

just wondering why this stiff wooly stuff, and if anyone has tried putting cotton or anything else in their carts instead? the material that comes with the carts doesn't seem to wick very well (i'm assuming that's the primary function of it), i have to top mine off all the time, even though 7/8ths of it is rather saturated. cotton may be too absorbent, but anyone try anything else with better wicking properties?

Paige,

What tends to happen, is after several top off's (7-8) the cartridge filling tends to liquify (sp?) over, so although the cartridge looks full, because the fibers are no longer spread out like they were when the cartridge first started, the transfer from filling to the steel wool wick is hindered.

Does that make sense? Liquid passes through the fibers great when they are spread apart, and you can see each individual fiber. At top off and time goes on, you see the fibers starting to stick together and get all junked up. When this happens, liquid from the rest of the cart doesn't pass through as easily and gets stuck.

I think I just tried explaining that twice...haha...hopefully one of the explanations you will understand.

That is why I tend to use 2 cartridges a day. After about 6-7 hours of use, I notice a lack in performance, and switch to a new cart. You can always try washing them however!

makes perfect sense, thanks cash. but yes, still wondering if there's something better out there. i don't even know what that stuff is to begin with. i wonder if some hemp would work??? it would burn easy if it ran dry (so don't do that), but you could buy a large supply of hemp wick for next to nothing and it's not mystery filling. must to try.

This makes sense to me CaSH. It seems like the fibers themselves become saturated with fluid and lose their rigidity and become mushy. Then they start packing together more tightly reducing their ability to transfer the fluid as efficiently.

EXACTLY! mEtoke!

I know TB there was a thread a few months back regarding different alternatives. Not even sure where to begin to search for it!

This is when I count on Kate to come through and post a link!!! hint hint ;)

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to be using a substitute for this material from a safety standpoint. You don't know what kind of chemicals are in other fiber products.

I said on the other thread in a joking way " I was going to get the fiber glass wool out my loft and try it" ....But would it work ...At the end of the day your not smoking the wool...As fiber glass is fire resintant so it should not be harmfull when vaping cos it cant burn ..... I realy dont know but ...It was just a mad thought ... If its no use to hold the liquid in the carts ...Then why not? .....And does fiber glass give of a smoke if you burn it? ... I never tried it !!! ....Mabey one reason it might not hold liquied very well is because it is glass !!! ... Hmmmmm ......... What is in our CARTS?

But what tiny particles are we taken in now? ...No one seems to know.... Im not being stupit here, but ....did this stuff come from SPACE or somthing, that we dont know what it is eh !!!!!!!! .... I was also under the impresion that we didnt take any of the FIBER into our lungs !!!.....I may be wrong on a few things here, but i like the feed back on what you think. ....Are we breathing in the fiber in the carts?

Not to mention breathing in tiny glass particles. Fiberglass is really made from glass.

as mentioned, never inhale fibre-glass. where a mask if you are around it. also a poster from the dutch forum warned about both fish-tank filler and stuffed toy filler. they contain things that are dangerous if heated and inhaled. as for what our carts are made of....never got a complete answer. I did long ago want to experiment with unbleached natural sea sponge but never got around to it. shucks.

Natural sponge sounds good to me.

Having laid lofts with fiberglass you'd be daft to use it in a cartridge - the glass fibres enter the air very easily and you need to wear a mask when using the stuff for the purpose it was intended. A glass fibre lodged in your lung will not be good news, it won't dissolve. Once lodged, legions may occur like they do when asbestos lodges in the lung.

I assume neither of these materials are used in cartridges - but Rusty raises a legitimate question.

(The Other Half has a natural sponge laying on the side of the bath that I've often wondered at but couldn't find a use for. If I ever get one of the 3 e-cig kits I've ordered I might just take a scissors to the bathroom ;).)
