Well, that was an epic fail... lol

First i tried to put my aga together, and then i couldnt for the life of me suss out how to get the top bit off so that you can actually get to the part where you wrap your coil... took me 20mins of prizing, turning, pulling and anything else i could to seperate the bloody thing - it just looked like one solid piece of metal with the actual heart of it stuck uselessly inside! Then i watched a few vids as to how it should be put together correctly and had no problems, then onto the coil wrapping itself....

I just could not make out on ANY of the vids just how you wrap the coil, so..

a) do you wrap the coil around the wick first and then start wrapping it around the various posts on the aga?

or

b) start wrapping it around the posts first and then around the wick?

Some did it one way, some others, but i just couldnt see what you do next!! So, if i am sat with the wick nearest to me and i either have the coil pre-wrapped or not, do i go to the screw on my left or my right, and where from there, etc and where do i finish?!?! and for something between 1.8 to 2.5 ohms is a 4/5 wrap best?

Sorry for all the questions, it's taken me 2 hours to get nowhere, although i really shouldnt have done it when i havent had my painkillers yet today (i get not only terrible back ache, but irritated really easily and have no patience whatsoever which doesnt help with a job like this!)

You guys made it sound so easy i think i had a false idea of how tricky it actually is.

And then to top things off i got a new carto, stuck a dozen or so drops of liquid in it then into my carto tank it went and i filled it up. On my evic it was saying 2.1ohms but it must be way under that... really really strong hits of it (not sure if they would be dry hits?) but nasty nasty burnt flavour and had to knock it down to 3v to even be able to vape it and even at that it's nothing like the flavour should be... hopefully it will settle, but the last carto i had in it wasnt like that... if anything a little weak on flavour was all.

Just one of those nights i think

first of all cody what are you using for the wick ? have you watched p busardo he`s very good mate.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnuYJeoS6Fc

Cotton works really well as a dripping wick with a micro coil.

I haven't used it in a tank system though.

It's great in a tank system too mate. I've used it in evods, protanks, KFL, aga and novas too. In a nova you can literally see the juice going down as you vape it ;)

I tried the ekowool, but it's too fat for my liking - i may try again at some point, but with the 1mm i think. Then i moved onto trying the silica. Looking at the vid, i think i'm on the right track actually. I've been wrapping my coil on the wick first then inserting the wick into the tank, and leaving about as much wick showing as the top of the centre post with the 3 washers on then one end of the coil goes under the screw, and the other end (top) gets wrapped between the 2nd and 3rd washer, but when i put it on the evic it just keeps telling me 'atomiser short'. Not too sure what i'm doing wrong at this point... perhaps i need to make sure the coil isnt touching at all as it's wrapped around the wick or something?

well it sounds like you are doing everything correct cody,

If your coil is spaced evenly it should be fine. Just keep tweaking, and you will get there. Have you tried firing it on a mech ?

Plus Todd has some vids on it too.

I usually make the wick and coil first, then check for resistance and correct coil spacing.

Insert the wick. Then attach the negative post, then last of all the positive post.

Check resistance again.

When I do a vertical coil, I've removed the negative terminal and I leave this open to use as a fill hole. I never lay the aga on it's side so no leaks. You can remove the negative terminal with mole grips.

I measure up the cotton (or ekowool for length) so it almost touches the bottom of the tank when inserted, plus an extra inch for coil wrapping and trimming at the top.

With cotton, I build the wick first then insert the cotton. For eko I wrap the coil onto the wick.

Then I remove one of the spare screws, to use as a wick hole, so that the negative and positive legs will be the same length when their attached.

Insert wick, fix negative connection - try to keep it off the deck by a mm or so. Loosen top nut from pos post and attach the positive wire. Don't tighten up the connections, until you've made sure your coils are spaced right, wick is properly in place and your wick legs are fairly equal in length.

Check resistance again, pre juice the wick and check for the sizzle and pop

Hope that helps a bit mate.

You'd be better with a multimeter mate, you might have built a sub-ohm coil, or you could have a short.

Yeah, thats why i suggested to try firing it on a mech, I have built coils in the past and thought i had made a mistake cos they wouldn`t fire on my vamo.

Put it on a mech, lo and behold...sizzle and pop.:)

I'll have one more go tonight, then leave it until tomorrow.

I'm guessing that either screw is negative? (I know zip about electrics!)

Cheers both for all your help though, much appreciated :)

Yes mate the centre post will be you positive, the other two will be negative; use one for your coil and the other for filling.

Yes mate any of the spare screws can be used as a negative, basically it just completes the circuit.

I'd say try again tomorrow mate, have a break.

Forgot to mention, I normally use 30 kanthal 4 or 5 wraps.

The good thing with a multimeter is you can use it to check the resistance of a length of wire too before you use it, by holding the pos lead of the meter on the end of the wire and running the neg lead along the wire til you get the resistance you want. That way you can calculate the length of wire needed for a given resistance - another good tip :)

Wooohooooo! Nailed one :D

Came out @ 1.3ohms, stuck it on the ba gua and the taste, th & vapour is easily best i've had... well pleased with that!

Thanks guys!

Well done cody,

Pat yourself on the back mate; I think it is very satisfying when you make your own coils. It gives you a sense of achievement, Well done again.

Something else you will find is that after you have done it a couple of times it becomes second nature.

Congrats T1, I am sure you will love it.

I have tried quite a few different coils with all different wires but this one is my all time favourite. It has been in one of my RM2's for about a month.

I take the cotton out every couple of days, dry burn it and it's as good as new. Takes less than 5 minutes.
