How d'ya know I wasn't at some time!? ....ha-ha!

- seriously, I was a member of St Johns Ambulance for some years before I was married, did voluntary ward duties for a time, and later worked in psycho-geriatric and theatre! All very rewarding, interesting, and enough for me to know I didn't want to work within the NHS ..and that was the mid 70's!
I really did want to be a nurse at one time - even looked at the QA Nursing Corps, and then thought I perhaps could go to medical school and be a doctor. Working within the NHS to get a feel for it soon decided me against! Too many politics, too many chiefs, not enough high quality 'shop floor' patient care.
I've always taken a keen interest in medicine, remedies and the various advances made. I lost my trust in the medical profession 40 years ago, and have tried to look out for all the family ever since.
As such, I read up on all drugs prescribed, treatments offered, alternatives, and where possible, the professional involved.
I became the type that will question a doctor about diagnosis and treatment until I'm as satisfied as I can be with the answers. I trust our vet more than the doctors, and that's a fact! They've become a band of form fillers and pill pushers. If we don't fall into a category from filling the forms in, they haven't a clue!
Good, hope it's at least bearable until you get an appointment.
Most things are worse first thing in the morning, and often last thing at night as our body becomes tired and natural defences start 'resting' to regenerate for a new day.
Ice packs are wonderful for many incidents of painful conditions if you can get close enough to the pain source. Only use it for 10 minutes in an hour because you can cause some damage otherwise to skin and nerve endings.
