Hello all,

I was just wondering how many of us have home gardens... I have had a garden for several years, I read a little and just go by instinct but every once in a while I run into a dilemma and need advice.
So far this season I bought some plants and they are in...I have some seeds I have saved from last year and I was wondering if it is too late to plant them???

This thread may be boring for some, but you should have a garden, it is awesome...

Peace...

I grew up on a farm and have a home garden now. I am no expert or anything but am a hobbyist gardener... I'd be happy to help however I can.

What type of seeds are we talking about?

hmmm, I am still at the office, but I think watermelon, heirloom tomatoes and a few other things...I will have to check. Last season whenever I had an exotic fruit or vegetable I made it a point to save the seeds for This season...I usually have 12 - 15 things in the garden, looking to add more this year...

Depending on what part of New York you are in you are either Zone 5 or 6. It's a little late to start the seeds on the tomatoes but it wouldn't stop me from planting. I've started way later (accounting for zones) so I think it's worth a shot. Start them indoors in a seed tray and put them in the closet for a few days. Keep them damp, warm and dark. Once they start to show signs of sprouting, throw them in the sun, keeping them moist and get them in the ground as soon as the stocks look strong enough. I'd estimate that this whole process would take less then 14 days for the tomatoes and I'd start the watermelon in another week.

Hi guys, I am trying to grow some tomatoes this year,(some in ground and some upside down). I planted some seeds about a week ago in a starter kit , the kit said to keep in light but not direct light, well nothing ever sprouted except for one seed that was sitting out of the soil in a drop of water. Could it be that I planted them too deep, or my water is no good, or the soil is bad???? Oh ya I built a tri-level flower box for my girlfriend (which she insisted we painted pink :( ...) and I helped her plant all her different types of vegetables(except tomatoes) in starter kits too, they all started sprounting in about 4-5 days!!!

I'd try planting the seeds too, a bit late, but why not? I have a massive garden and have been planting all week and last week too, reason why I haven't been on here much :) gardening is my personal zen time. I also built a deck extension, pretty cool, more room to sit outside with the dogs and get fresh air

on a side-note, did you ever get your tee-shirts in?

only veggies are tomatoes and cukes. I have so many flowers...impatients, morning glories (those re-seed themselves though) ivy, elephant ears, marigolds, zinnias, begonias, foxglove....too many to list really, but got a new plant 2 years ago called a "candy corn" very
vine-y & has candy corn looking blooms, very cool on my deck growing up the lattice.

with my flowers I like a mix of annuals and peri's. My fave. has to be my varigated weigelia (sp?) it's about ready to bloom pink & purple bloosms now, planted that when it was only an inch high, now is bigger than I am. Great privacy ;)

I love gardening! Yes, Shimmy it's my zen too! This year I'm growing tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and pumpkins. I usually grow peppers and string beans but ripped up our yard this year so I wont have all my favorites. I grow many flowers too! I'm so addicted. We are a bit cold in NJ right now. Especially tonight it will be very cold. Im crossing my fingers for my Black eyes susan vines that I put in a little to early. I was a little excited this year because I found new colors than the basic yellow and orange. So, I hope to wake up tomorrow morning to still having my flowers outside. Best of luck to everyone. Hopefully it will warm up here soon!

We're only on our second summer as Vegegardeners.
Happily (as far as growing goes anyway) we're in Southern California ,so we grow year round and never get snow let alone frost.
We had winter crop of Green beans,Sweet peas,Potatoes ,Broccoli,Carrots,Leaf and head lettuce,Cabbage,Celery, onions, and Garlic.

Now we have 4 different kinds of tomatoes, potatoes,Garlic ,sunflowers ,corn, Sweet peas, pumpkins , watermelons, green beans, bell peppers, onions,Cucumbers ,celery and Serrano peppers.
2 nights ago I dug over 50 lbs. of potatoes and have about twenty potato plants in flowering mode. All of this is grown in our small back yard, mostly in above ground gardens.
Thankfully,we have a lot of family and friends nearby to pawn our excess off on. lol
Have fun and good luck!

for seeds, try soaking them overnight, then planting....

I gave up on most veggies...too many bunnies here and if I had a nickel for every tomato that I saw and told it (yes, I talk to my plants, lol) I'm gonna pick you tomorrow...only to find it half eaten the next day :(

so I stick with a small amount of tomatoes and some cukes and forgot about my bush beans. Gotta have tomatoes though...love green fried!!!

back to the nursery for me, need a few more flats and some vinca vines, sweet potato vines, etc...everyone have fun planting!
